Explain the difference between a mansard roof and a gambrel roof. If you got those questions right, draw a double swinging door and a double pocket door. Now try explaining the difference between plank flooring and parquet flooring. Those are just a few of the dozens of home construction basics you will learn in this interesting little, but very useful, new book, Anatomy of a House, (by Fayal Greene (Doubleday, New - York), 1991, 108 pages, $9.95). It is filled with drawings of various parts of typical houses. If you are planning to build a house or remodel your present home, this book is essential. In the book's introduction, Fayal Greene explains why this book was written. In rebuilding eight houses for her family, the author emphasizes why the homeowner needs to understand construction terminology to be able to convey ideas to architects and contractors, so the result is what the owner wants. Much like a human anatomy textbook contains drawings of virtually every human body part, this book contains illustrations of home components such as different types of roofs, porches, porticos, chimneys, siding, brickwork, ceilings, moldings, doors, fireplaces and many others. A special feature is a directory of building suppliers with their addresses, so the reader can contact them for samples and catalogs to show to architects and contractors. On a scale of one to 10, this reference book rates an 8.
