C-8Pro basketball the Cincinnati enquirer Sunday, October 13, 1991 CFL's Flutie closes in on all-time pro passing record ENQUIRER NEWS SERVICES 1 mm knee. He had surgery on the knee during preseason. ' Smith, who missed five of the Bills' first six games, will sit out today's home game against Indianapolis, and will miss at least two more games. fWW . I Thursday, Smith had a checkup of his Une of the greatest records in professional football is within short reach of Doug Flutie. As quarterback of the British Columbia Lions in the Canadian Football League, Flutie will break the record for passing yards in a surgically repaired left knee at the Ala Flutie. The Rocket has 2,198 all-purpose yards, ranking him second in the league. He is averaging 9.5 yards per carry but has carried only 22 times; he has 52 catches for an average of 18.2 yards; he is fourth in the league in punt returns and sixth in kickoff returns. He has yet to run back a punt or a kickoff for a touchdown, a specialty that made him a sensation at' Notre Dame. Smith on injured reserve ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. The Buffalo Bills on Saturday placed All-Pro defensive end Bruce Smith on injured reserve because of continuing knee trouble. Smith has fluid and swelling in his left Most Valuable Player in the CFL, having a greater season than Toronto's heralded Raghib (Rocket) Ismail. Going into this weekend, Flutie had thrown for 5,094 yards in 14 games. He has already eclipsed the NFL record of 5,084 yards set in 1984 by Dan Marino of the Miami Dolphins, who put that number up in 16 games. The professional record was set by Warren Moon for Edmonton in 1983, his last year in the CFL before he left for the Houston Oilers. Moon passed for 5,648 yards that season. Flutie is averaging 363 yards per game, and at that pace, he will break Moon's record in the 16th game, and by the end of the 18-game CFL season he will have become the first man to throw for 6,000 yards. Another interesting development, and very unexpected, is that Flutie apparently has become the No. 1 gate attraction in the league, over Ismail. The Toronto Argonauts, showcasing Ismail, have averaged about 5,000 more fans per game than they did a year ago. Meanwhile, attendance in Vancouver is up about 7,000 per game. The Lions are outdrawing Toronto, 38,009 per game to 36,736. Ismail is playing well, but not as well as bama Sports Medicine Clinic, where doctors determined the knee did not need further surgery. ; "A condition of swelling and fluid continues to re-occur," said Dr. Richard Weiss, Bills team physician. "Therefore,, after extensive deliberation ... it was decided that Bruce would be placed on season within the oug Flutie next eight days. Flutie, cast off by the Chicago Bears and the New England Patriots in the NFL, seems well on his way to being named injured reserve." Harper puts fear behind BY JOHANNES TESSELAAR Los Angeles Daily News LOS ANGELES Ron Harper started training camp minus two braces the one he wore on his right knee last season and the one that wore on his mind. By most standards, Harper's comeback from the serious knee injury he suffered 16 days into 1990 was a success. "I have pretty much put all the fear of playing behind me," the Los Angeles Clippers' starting off guard said. "I think I'm ready to have one of my better seasons." That's good news for the Clippers, who have been nothing but bad news when Harper hasn't been in the lineup. The Clippers are 31-36 in games Harper has played in the past two seasons, 28-62 in games he's been out because of the injury. Harper scored 13 points and handed out 10 assists in Friday's exhibition opener. "He looks to be a lot quicker and more active than he was at any point last season," Clippers' coach Mike Schuler said. "His leg is stronger. He looks a little bit like the Harper of old." Before tearing the anterior cruciate ligament and cartilage in his right knee, Harper was one of the best off guards in the league. He missed a year after surgery, then played in 39 games last season, averaging 19.6 points and 35.5 minutes. He was able to slither and cut his way toward the basket as in the past, but he had trouble finishing plays. He shot a career-low 39.1. "I was afraid to extend going to the basket," the sixth-year pro out of Miami of Ohio said. The physical part wasn't a problem. "In the back of your mind, you're saying, 'Is your knee ready for a spin move? Are you strong enough for a spin move?' " Harper said. "There's something that tells you, 'Don't spin.' " Playing a lot of summer ball in Ohio, plus working with leg weights, helped him gain more confidence in the knee. "I figured I could be a decent ballplayer," Harper said, "but I couldn't be the ballplayer I wanted to be unless I got over (the fear factor)." But the leg this year is stronger, according to trainer Keith Jones. "His knee's at about 85 of what it was before the injury," Jones said. "He was in the high 70s, low 80s last year. That's a good improvement." Jones said Harper's leg is an inch bigger than last year when measured just above the knee. Harper will again strap a brace to his knee for games. He was to wear the brace at the start of camp last week, but because his leg had grown, it didn't fit. "I had a choice," Harper said. "I could either practice (without the brace) or watch practice. I don't like to sit." So he went at it with just a knee sleeve. "The things I was able to do the first day with the sleeve gave me confidence for the second day," he said. "I'm a lot more comfortable without the brace. I feel I run better, I jump better." "It's something about that brace. You always feel you shouldn't do certain things with it. And as a player, you've got to be comfortable." . v i!L For domestic JfA A f and import 4LICM vehicles. )y'lV SOUND isoujtion FROM w 1 2995 MMi ; to 3995 new ready-aire HEATER CORES Special Order Heater Cores available at Everyday Low Price.
