The report . found ABC's commercial time was up by two seconds per hour. That left CBS with 11 minutes and six seconds of each prime-time hour spent on commercials, promotions and public service announcements. NBC was next at 11 minutes and ABC was at 10 minutes, 16 seconds. The networks are fighting to hold their shrinking share of the television audience. They drew more than 90 of the viewers in the late 1970s, but saw their share" slide to 63 last season. Peter Chrisanthopoulos, president of the Network Television Association, said the association conducted its own study of how much time TV outlets allowed for commercials last November. It showed that the three major networks averaged nine minutes per hour for local or national commercials while independent stations averaged 1 1 minutes, 37 seconds and the five biggest cable networks averaged 10 minutes, 58 seconds. We suggested that the right way to play the hand was to strip the pointed suits and cash the ace of clubs while drawing trumps, then lead a club to the queen. That wins any time East holds the king of clubs or when West holds a doubleton king, as in the diagram. That is probably the correct way to tackle the hand had there been no opposition bidding. When West has bid diamonds, however, there is an alternative, perhaps even better, path to success. West, who has little enough in the way of high cards for a two-level overcall, almost certainly has a six-card suit. So ruff the opening lead, cross to the queen of hearts and ruff another diamond. Draw the last trump, cash the king and ace of spades and ruff a spade on the table. Now cash the ace of diamonds for a club discard and lead the board's last diamond. Instead of ruffing, discard another club from hand. West must win this trick, and then has a choice of methods with which to commit suicide. A club return would be into declarer's ace-queen tenace, and any plain suit would permit declarer to ruff in dummy while discarding the queen of clubs from hand. ENQUIRER WIRE SERVICES The three major networks are devoting more time to commercials even though they're struggling to hold onto their share of the viewing audience, a study says. The study said that NBC, ABC and CBS had increased the amount of prime time allowed for commercials and non-program messages. The head of a group that represents the networks said despite the reported increase, the networks devote less time to ads than cable networks or independent stations. Researchers who compiled the latest Television Commercial Monitoring Report studied the amount of time allotted for commercials in March compared with results from a similar survey in November 1990. The studies were conducted for the American Association of Advertising Agencies and the Association of National Advertisers. CBS and NBC each allotted 20 seconds more to commercials each hour during the prime evening viewing hours in March than they ACROSS 1 Coffee or cider follower 5 Weaken gradually 8 Lake or singer 12 Dies 13 Nigerian 14 Role for Luise Rainer 15 Bed throw 17 Barn topper 18 Spanish queen 19 Shabby 20 Postpone 21 Low island 22 The heart 23 Mountain climber's spike 26 Chorus members 30 Serb or Croat 31 Small group of seals 32 Oil-producing country 33 Against the law 35 Very dirty 36 Sought office 37 S.A. country BY OMAR SHARIF and TANNAH HIRSCH North-South vulnerable.
