This fall, many kids are stacking blocks, matching colors and deciphering popular sayings. No, they're not playing games at recess. They're going one-on-one with intelligence-quotient evaluators. These activities, common elements in IQ tests, may help determine a child's IQ, a number that can brand a kid a genius or failure for life. That's nonsense, contends a leading IQ critic, Harvard psychiatrist Howard Gardner. Because IQ tests measure just two intelligence types, verbal and mathematical, kids with other aptitudes are mislabeled as underintelligent, he insists. In IQ's place, Gardner and colleagues offer the Theory of Multiple Intelligences, which asserts that seven thought processes exist in separate brain regions and can be assessed separately: spatial (thinking in terms of physical space), bodily-kinesthetic (using the body effectively), musical (showing sensitivity to rhythm and sound), interpersonal (understanding and interacting with others), intrapersonal (understanding interests and goals), linguistic (using language effectively) and mathematical and logical (reasoning and calculating). One critic of "MI," University of Virginia psychology professor Sandra Scarr, flatly calls it "dumb." She says IQ tests accurately measure "a general level of intelligence that makes a big difference in how people perform at every level." The MI theory is not a proven fact. Gardner has not even developed accurate tests. But schools in search of ways to reinvigorate their programs are beginning to incorporate MI principles. In Marysville, Wash., Bruce Campbell converted his grade-school classroom into "learning centers," one for each intelligence type. In Somerville, Mass., Project Spectrum assesses preschoolers' learning ability by means of techniques developed jointly with Harvard and Tufts universities. Across the USA, about 30 programs are under way. Says Thomas Hatch, one of Gardner's colleagues at Harvard, MI "values a whole set of skills that have been ignored." And at prices like these, it's breathtaking. Who takes IQ tests? There are tests for people of all ages. Most school systems give IQ tests but fewer today than in the past because of a fear that the results might be misused. Parents must give permission. Should parents know their child's IQ score? Yes, if there's a reason (such as to confirm a learning disability). What Is the USA's average IQ? The average is set at 100, and nationally the results are spread out so that 3.8 percent of those who take the test score above 130; 12.7 percent, between 115 and 130; 67 percent, between 85 and 114; 12.7 percent, between 70 and 84; and 3.8 percent below 70. A score of 70 indicates mental retardation. By John Snyder A m 5 4 W Fare effective 91691-52192.
