Doctors agree that vasectomy traditional or the no-scalpel method is easier, cheaper and less risky than the counterpart for women tubal ligation, which involves tying off the fallopian tubes to block fertilization. Tubal ligation requires general anesthesia and hospital facilities. Because it's a procedure that invades the abdominal cavity, it carries a greater risk of infection and complication than vasectomy and involves a three- to five-day recuperation period. Vasectomy costs about $400, compared with $1,500 to $2,000 for a tubal ligation. Insurance usually covers vasectomy, but policy EXIT 39 OFF 1-275 EXIT 63-B OFF I-275 753-6588 -1710 OR 333-44442081 limitations vary. About 9.6 of women of child-bearing age have had tubal ligation, another 4.6 rely on a partner's vasectomy for permanent birth control. Both procedures are more than 99 effective at preventing pregnancy. Dr. Alan Cordell, urologist with Urology Associates of Cincinnati in Western Hills, says men who don't know about the no-scalpel technique seem less apprehensive about undergoing a vasectomy when they learn about it. "A lot of them are very reluctant to go under the knife," he says. "When they find out it's not really an incision, that it's really a puncture hole about the size of a matchstick head, they think it's not too bad." Like a tubal ligation, vasectomy is difficult to reverse.
