Jim Courier and Andre Agassi, schooled in the same art of flying baseline blasts and karate-style tennis, ganged up on Germany in the Davis Cup semifinals Friday night. Agassi and Courier leaped off the red clay as if they were bouncing on a mat. 'irfjTHtfrl 1 They beat Wimbledon champi-IjoUllJaP. 1 on Michael Stich and Carl-Ewe Steeb to put the defending champion United States within one victory of the final. Agassi and Courier, teen-age rivals not long ago in the same tennis academy and opponents this year in the French Open final, cheered each other on as they gave teammates Scott Davis and David Pate the chance to wrap up the series in doubles Saturday. Courier, who beat Agassi on a similar red clay court in Paris in June, had the tougher match of the two in the Kemper Arena but came through with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Steeb, a clay-loving late replacement for injured Boris Becker. Steeb played better than Becker might have in the first set, surprising Courier with a show of power and accuracy that had the American scurrying from side to side chasing balls. "If he kept playing like that, I knew it would be a long day," Courier said. "But I didn't think he could keep up that pace. It was a matter of getting used to the clay. Once I got aggressive, I wasn't slipping as much. I got control of the points." In the second set, Courier hit a stunningly hard forehand into the corner that gave him a 4-0 lead and briefly silenced the annoying rattlers German fans had been twirling. Steeb, unable to touch the ball, simply stared in amazement at the mark in the clay. 4th-Condltioned Pace, $1,200. Classy Raider (D. Miner) 3.80, 2 SO, 2.40 Dear Domitian (E. Jets ihe American tans in the crowd of 11,259 roared and waved little flags, and Courier's victory after that was never in doubt. Though he blew one opportunity to end the match when he was broken in the ninth game of the fourth set, he didn't waste another as he broke back immediately, closing it out with another powerful forehand crosscourt. Agassi could hardly wait for his match to begin and end, to rid himself of the frustration that had been festering since his first-round loss at the U.S. Open. He wasted little time against Stich, taking apart the Wimbledon champion 6-3, 6-1, 6-4 in 101 minutes of power tennis from the baseline to give the United States a 1-0 lead in the best-of-5 weekend series. "I've been working so hard since the U.S. Open," Agassi said. "I've been so focused. It hurt me real bad to go out that early. I used that to get strong. I've never been so focused." Agassi closed out the match on his serve, ending it with a booming forehand topspin volley approach from midcourt that Stich couldn't touch. Agassi dropped to his knees, got up to shake hands with Stich, then whooped round and round on the court as the crowd roared and waved American flags. The winner here will play in late November against the winner of the France-Yugoslavia series. France took a 2-0 lead in the series Friday with victories by Guy Forget and Fabrice Santoro over a Yugoslav team missing its stars because of civil war. Forget, ranked No. 6 in the world, opened the semifinal with a 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 victory over 19-year-old Srdjan Muskatirovic, ranked 439th and yet to play in a full-fledged event on the pro tour. Santoro, the hero of France's quarterfinal victory over Australia, rallied to beat Yugoslavia's only veteran, Slobodan Zivojinovic, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-0), 3-6, 6-3 in 4 hours, 10 minutes.
