Your name may find its way onto a mailing list for travel-related sales pitches. In past years, the names, addresses and telephone numbers of Buckeye line callers have not been compiled and sold. But the operator of the phone service, a Columbus company, proposes to sell the names to generate revenue for itself and reduce the state's costs of operating the toll-free travel line. "It is one of our suggested revenue generating programs," said Rick Milenthal, president of the Columbus company that operates the 1-800-Buckeye line, "but the state (division of travel and tourism) will be directing us as to what we will be doing. "We would only lease the (mailing) list to travel-oriented businesses," added Milenthal, president of Family Vacation Services Inc. Sale of the list could generate $200,000 during two years, he said. Monday, the state Controlling Board will consider approval of a new contract between the Ohio Department of Development and Milenthal's company for operation of the 1-800 number through June, 1993. An unsuccessful bidder for rights to operate the line, Donald Gray, president of Marketel Info-Systems Inc. of Columbus, complained Wednesday that Milenthal's proposal would be an invasion of privacy. Milenthal said Gray "may be bitter about losing" the 1991-93 contract. The new contract between Milenthal and the state also requires tourist attractions such as Sea World and Kings Island to pay the state between 10C and 20t for each of their promotional brochures the state sends to 1-800-Buckeye line callers. The new contract will allow Milenthal's company to solicit each 1-800-Buckeye line caller to join the "Buckeye Travel Club" for $6 a year. Members will get regular state mailings material that now is free to regular callers. Sale of the mailing list, new fees for brochures and travel club memberships are estimated to raise $800,000 for Milenthal's company during its two-year contract.
