I HIS SAY: Plenty of attention Jias been paid to Derek Humphry, think, reason or even move. A decision that ought to have been ours alone was being made by others." In 1989, Schragis formed the Carol Publishing Group, and he joined the Hemlock Society. He eventually contacted Humphry regarding the distribution of all Hemlock titles. "My goal in pursuing Final Exit as a publishing project was to force the issue of euthanasia into discussions throughout the country," Schragis wrote. Last week, Final Exit was on the magazine's non-fiction best-seller list for the fourth week. BOOK SALE: Used books of all kinds, magazines, video tapes and records are for sale through Friday at Friends of the Kenton County Public Library annual book sale at Florence Mall. Hours are 10 a.m.-9 p.m. OPEN HOUSE: Writers of all genres are invited to an open house at the Writers Resource Center recently opened by Cincinnati Writers Project. The center is at 3015 Phillips Ave., Price Hill, adjacent to the Church of the Nativity. Infor- executive director of the Hemlock Society and author of Final Exit. Less attention has been paid to the book's publisher, Carol Publishing Group, and Carol's founder, Stephen Schragis, who made the decision to publish the controversial suicide manual. Schragis defended his position and provided some background in a recent issue of Publishers Weekly. It was, he said, not an easy decision. He expected the controversy but did not expect the book to become a best seller. "I agree completely with Dr. Arthur Caplan, a bioethicist at the University of Minnesota, regarding the sales of Final Exit," Schragis wrote. " Tt is the loudest statement of protest of how medicine is dealing with terminal illness and dying.'
