Wear safety goggles when using power tools or a hammer, and wear a well-secured safety harness or rope which has been secured to an immovable object. Use an extension ladder at least 2 Inches longer than the eave height, and make sure the ladder has safety feet which grab and hold firmly. 0 How to estimate shingle coverage. Shingles are sold by the square, which is enough to cover a 100-square-foot (or 10-by-10) area. Measure each roof section along the eave and rake (the inclined edge of a sloped roof over an end wall). Multiply the length of the eave times the length of the rake to determine square feet. Add the various areas you've measured; then allow an extra 10 for waste. Divide the total by 100 to find the number of squares you'll need. Gather your tools. The required tools are already in most do-it-yourselfers' toolboxes; hammer, chisel and saw, putty knife, tape measure, utility knife and chalkllne. A carpenter's apron, safety goggles, caulking gun, flat-bladed shovel, and ladder are also necessary. 0 Prepare the roof. If It's necessary to remove the old roof, start at the roof ridge and work Installing a new roof isn't out of the realm of possibility for do-it-yourselfers. A roof with a slope (pitch) of 4 Inches to 6 Inches per foot is easiest to Install, but roofs which are either flatter or steeper call for the services of a professional. Tips for choosing and working with a protessional roofing contractor 0 Check with the Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints have been filed against the contractors, you are considering. Be certain all workers are bonded, licensed and Insured. Ask for proof of insurance before anyone starts work. 0 Make sure the contractor's bid Includes debris cleanup and a specific completion date. 0 Make sure the contractor installs shingles in rows going across and up the roof, not vertically up the roof. Nails should always be applied below the self-sealing strip. 0 Make sure all the shingles used for the job are from the same manufacturing run. Check the run numbers on each bundle; minor color variations exist between runs. Roofing installation basics 0 Safety precautions. Pull out remaining nails and old flashings with a hammer, and repair the decking wherever necessary. Underlayment and drip edges. Apply saturated-felt underlayment over the wood deck before applying new roofing. Allow a 2-inch horizontal overlap and a 4-lnch vertical overlap. Non-corrosive drip edges should be applied along the eaves and rakes to help shed water at the roof edges. Applying the shingles. There are three different methods for applying tabbed-strlp shingles the 6-lnch method, the 5-lnch method and the 4-inch method. For example, the 6-inch method means that each course after the first and up to the sixth starts with a shingle 6 Inches shorter than the preceding one. This prevents the cutouts In one course from lining up directly over those below. Apply shingles horizontally across and up the roof, cutting them to go around obstructions like vents and chimneys. Use a liberal coating of asphalt cement to seal gaps between cutout shingles. Nailing pattern. Use 11 -gauge or 12-gauge hot-dipped galvanized roofing nails. Make sure they're long enough to penetrate all roofing materials and Into the deck by a least three-quarters inch. Facts on siding 821-2818 7117 VINE ST.
