Monday. Lorkland. charge ot arrangements. Brady bill CONTINUED FROM PAGE B-1 letters and calls 80 against the Brady bill. Wednesday, Cincinnati police officers backing the Staggers alternative stopped by his office.

Last month in St. Bernard, he faced more than 100 members of Firearm Facts, many of whom oppose any federal handgun law. "We all kind of admired Charlie. He was Daniel coming into the lion's den," said Frank Kern, who was at the meeting and campaigned against Luken last fall. Gradison also has been flooded with mail and confronted by hostile constituents at town meetings in Amelia last Monday and Montgomery last month.

But he has made up his mind. He supported a waiting period the last time the House considered thejissue in 1988 Porn protest draws 300 THE CINCINNATI ENQUIRER Between 250 and 300 people heard Butler County officials denounce pornography Saturday and promise to drive sexually oriented videotapes out of local stores. Hamilton Mayor Adolf Olivas, Butler County Prosecutor John Holcomb and Sheriff Richard Holzberger spoke at the rally on the courthouse square in Hamilton. Holzberger said owners of stores stocking such tapes are being sent letters, asking them to voluntarily remove the material from their shelves. If that doesn't work, other actions might follow, he said.

There are 14 video stores in Fairfield, West Chester, Middletown, Hamilton and Monroe with about 6,000 adult videotapes, Phil Burress, president of the Greater Cincinnati Citizens for Community Values, told the crowd at the Butler County Courthouse. Burress said pornographic videos no longer are Uvailable in Hamilton County. handgun murders. Hamilton also is skeptical that the instant-check system can be put in place quickly, Mehl said. For Bunning, Boehner and McEwen, the Brady bill is nothing more than "feel-good" legislation.

"The country is getting caught up in the emotionalism of the Brady bill, but if you look at it and ask what does this bill really do, frankly, it doesn't do much at all," Boehner said. Bunning said he is going to support the instant-check system for one reason: "It is a start. Obviously the mechanism is not in place, but once we get that kind of legislation on the books, more states will implement and gear up for it." system. Under the Staggers bill, states must upgrade their computer systems so gun sellers can determine with a phone call if a consumer has a criminal record, much as they check credit cards now. Opponents argue that those systems would take years and millions of dollars to put in place.

The Brady bill gives police seven days to check whatever records they wish, but it does not specifically require background investigations. If gun sellers have heard nothing from local police seven days after submitting an application, they may make the sale.
