Ickey Woods has bruised ribs, as does Stanford Jennings. Eric Ball sustained a mild concussion against New Orleans. Craig Taylor has a pinched shoulder nerve.

John Holi-field has a bad knee. "My guess is Ickey will play," Wyche said. "Eric Ball seemed all right today. But if you noticed, James Brooks played virtually the whole game (at New Orleans)." Replay worse than original Wyche found no solace in viewing tapes of the 24-10 squashing by New Orleans. "Normally, a game like that, you come back and look at the films and see a lot of good things you didn't see in the game, and you don't feel quite as bad.

"This time it was the reverse. I feel worse about the game after looking at the films, because there were more mistakes made than we noticed during the game. "They're not mistakes we don't think we can fix by the time we get into the regular season (but) we didn't execute. "We haven't let the season slip away from us but it's to the Norm Stewart to release him from his scholarship two months ago but was refused. Soviets likely in Iditarod WASILLA, Alaska: Two teams from the Soviet Union are expected to enter the 1990 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race from Anchorage to Nome.

Grambling names James coach GRAMBLING, Former NBA player Aaron James was named head basketball coach at Grambling State. James takes charge of a program reprimanded by the NCAA this month for rules violations under former coach Bob Hopkins, who resigned in June. Pittsburgh loses nine freshmen PITTSBURGH: Athletic Director Ed Bozik said the University of Pittsburgh doesn't have "a major problem," even though nine freshman football and basketball recruits have been academic casualties.

All five of Pitt's basketball recruits are ineligible, four because they did not meet NCAA Proposition 48 standards and the fifth because he did not graduate from high school. Quarterback Gary Clayton became the fourth casualty among football recruits. Recruit wants out of Missouri COLUMBIA, An NCAA investigation into the Missouri basketball program apparently has cost the Tigers a highly regarded recruit from Detroit. Daniel Lyton, considered one of the top high school power forwards in the nation, said that he wanted out because the school might face probation over possible recruiting violations. Lyton said he asked coach ENQUIRER NEWS SERVICES DUISBURG, West Germany: The United States won its first major men's international basketball competition in three years on Tuesday with an 88-80 victory over the Soviet Union in the gold medal game of the World University Games.

Stephen Thompson of Syracuse scored 16 points to lead the U.S., while Stacey Aug-mon, the only player here who also played on the bronze medal team at Seoul, added 15 points. The U.S. overcame an early eight-point deficit to take a 47-40 halftime lead. Goundars Vetra led all scorers with 27 points. In track and field, Kamy Keshmiry gave the U.S.

its fourth gold of the games when he won the discus with a throw of 214 feet, 7 inches. Permanent ban proposed SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico: A proposal to ban forever from the Olympics any athlete who tests positive for drugs at the Games will be studied by the ruling body of the International Olympic Committee. The IOC's executive board agreed to look at the proposal by Anita De Frantz, a committee member from the U.S. The measure, if adopted, would only involve Olympic drug tests and would not be retroactive, so sprinter Ben Johnson and others caught using drugs last summer in Seoul would regain eligibility once current bans run out. Coe regains old form BERN, Switzerland: World record holder Sebastian Coe ran his fastest 800-meter race since 1985 and Renaldo Nehemiah, who lost his world record in the 110 meters hurdles two weeks ago, snapped back with his best run in eight years at an international meet here.

Coe finished in 1 minute, 43.38 seconds. Nehemiah, 30, whipped out of the blocks and held off a finish-line challenge from fellow American Tonie Campbell to win in 13.20 seconds. Suns sign Battle PHOENIX: Rookie forward Kenny Battle, a first-round pick acquired by Phoenix in a draft-day trade with the Detroit Pistons, signed a point now where there can be no round draft choices. It gets harder now. After next weekend, all teams must be at 47.

"The last one's the toughest," coach Sam Wyche agreed. "Today, we had to let some good football players go. The main thing is, they're all good people who worked hard to try and make this team." Released were ninth-round choice Richard Stephens, an offen-j sive tackle, and 12th-rounder Dana Wells, a nose tackle. Free agents waived were wide receiver John Garrett, tight end Franklin Harris, running back Brett Grimshaw and offensive tackle John Guerrero. Should holdouts Max Montoya, Eddie Brown and Rodney Holman join the club in the next few days, as many as 16 players would have to go in the final cutdown.

"You can't be exact, because of special teams things," Wyche said, "but go down the positions. "We'll try to keep three quar-' terbacks, four or five wide receivers, four or five running backs, eight offensive linemen and two or three tight ends. "On defense, it's six defensive linemen and between linebackers and defensive backs, 15 football players, either seven and eight or eight and seven. And two kickers. "None of those positions are to those numbers yet." That means some close races have to be called, with linebacker, running back, wide receiver and kicker the closest.

Clean team No Bengals were on the NFL list of players banned for positive steroid tests. None had been considered likely. "I suspected that was the way it was going to be," Wyche said. "The steroid thing boils down to this: everybody knows they're bad for you in the long run. "Everybody knows it can help you in the short run but you pay for it later.

That's why there has to be immediate action." The league announced plans to test for steroids last spring and warned that suspensions would en-. sue. Of those set down Tuesday, Wyche said, "It's like Boomer (Esiason) puts it, there are 20 guys dumber than a sack of rocks." Running backs bruised By waiving Grimshaw, the Ben- more relaxing. The obvious answer to offensive shortcomings is the absence of three 1989 Pro Bowlers Hoi man, Brown and Montoya. "We can't cop out that way," US dhdDdDUDfWm Wyche said.

"We miss those guys. They're good players. It would be great to have them here. But if they're not here, this team's not coming apart." Offensive line takes shape In the absence of Montoya and injured Joe Walter, the Bengals have used three different guard-tackle combinations on the right side of the offensive line. That will change, Wyche said, when Blados' knee heals.

"If it were tomorrow, we'd have Paul Jetton at center, Bruce Kozer-ski at right guard and Blades at right tackle, and we'd be in good shape," he said. The left side is in good hands with Bruce Reimers at guard and Anthony Munoz at tackle. "Reimers is the guy who's playing Pro Bowl ball," Wyche said. "He was just dynamite in that (New Orleans) game, just dominating. We're in good shape from center on out on the left side." III ALL-SEASON! Save! Road gripping performance radial! Lomax has been hobbled with degenerative arthritis in his left hip since the 1988 preseason but fuses to retire. The 30-year-old, who has thrown for 22,771 yards and 136 touchdowns in his Cardinal career, is in the second year of a four-year, $5.7 million contract that pays him $1.3 million this season. AH of the money is guaranteed.

Gary Hogeboom, a 10-year pro signed to a four-year, $3.27 million contract last March as an unrestricted free agent, now is the Cardinal starter with second-year pro Tom Tupa and rookie Timm Ro- senbach as backups. Tupa, a third-round pick in 1988, completed 4 of 6 passes for 49 yards last season. Rosenbach, a first-round pick in the supplemen- tal draft, signed a five-year, $5.3 million contract on Aug. 18 but has yet to throw a pass as a pro. Browner ends holdout MANKATO, Minn.

Saying it's time to do what he does best, play strong safety as good as or better than anyone else in the NFL, a reserved Joey Browner reported to Minnesota Vikings training camp Tuesday. "My job is to play football. This is what my life is. I love doing it. I love playing here," said Browner, a holdout for 29 days.

"Everyone 'C knows why I stayed out. It was just time for me to get ready for what I actually do play football." Browner said all he wanted was to be paid commensurate to his ability. Other safeties, notably San Francisco's Ronnie Lott and Kan-; sas City's Deron Cherry, are paid about three times as much. "I'm going on seven years and I've done everything they want me to do. I don't know how much more I can do," he said.
