Ago 75. Dec, HUN1, Helen 26 Dobbling fl. BY DAVE BEASLEY The Cincinnati Kwiuiirr Sidney Ten-Kyck, a Cincinnati radio pioneer who was said to have broken the humor line at Powel Crosley's WLW in the 1920s, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center. He was 86.

He had suffered heart disease for many years and had been wearing a pacemaker, said his niece, Nancy Tretter Jones of Burlington. Mr. Ten-Eyck began announcing here for L.B. Wilson, who started WCKY in Covington. He then moved to WLW.

"Mr. Crosley had said there would be no humor on WLW, but Sid did something irreverent and Crosley gave in," veteran area broadcaster Nick Clooney said. "Sid broke the humor line in Cincinnati radio." Clooney, who recently interviewed Mr. Ten-Eyck for WCET-TV, said Mr. Ten-Eyck remembered his beginning days when staff announcers were also producers and directors of their own shows.

Clooney recalled him saying, "To be an announcer then was a calling. Many came but few were chosen." "He was a gentleman during the time when that was expected in radio broadcasting." Mr. Ten-Eyck moved to New York in the infancy of radio net- music personalities of his day. He took the program to New York City, where it ran on NBC during the Depression until it ran out of sponsors. He also worked in Dayton, Ohio, Washington and Philadelphia.

After radio, Mr. Ten-Eyck worked in many fields, including about eight years as a San Quentin prison guard. "He told me many stories about his experiences there with prisoners," his niece said. In 1963, he returned to Covington and worked as a security guard and did occasional work in radio. In recent years he had been living at the Golden Towers senior citizens apartments in Covington.

He became a prolific writer of letters to the editor and believed he may have held a record for the numbers of letters printed in Cincinnati daily newspapers. His wife, Dorothy "Dolly" Tret-ter-Ten-Eyck, died in 1978. He is survived by another niece, Dottie Miller Vandamert Moore's Hill, and a nephe'w, Sidney Miller of Florida. A memorial Mass will be said at the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, Madison Avenue, Covington, at noon Thursday. There will be no visitation.

Nick really came from THF. ASSOCIATED PRESS COLUMBUS, Ohio A white-bearded man dons red suits every December to portray a jolly old fellow associated with the Christmas season. But Herb Taylor, a part-time employee of the Ohio Historical Society's educational division, plays characters from different centuries: today's Santa Claus and his 18th century ancestor, St. Nicholas. "Santa Claus originated with Nicholas, a popular bishop who lived during the fourth century in what is now Turkey," Taylor said.

"Legend portrays Nicholas as a kindly man with a reputation for doing good deeds, among which was the giving of gifts to children." Taylor plays St. Nicholas at Ohio Village, a replica of an 18th century town at the society's headquarters near the Ohio State Fairgrounds. He is also a Santa at the Lazarus department store downtown. The veteran of 12 years in community theater begins his days during the holiday season by entertaining children in the department store's "Breakfast with Santa." Later, he sheds his portly Santa image and takes up the slender figure of St. Nicholas, clad in knickers, a red frock coat and a bearskin hat.

Taylor's dual Yule personalities nurtured his interest in the origin of Santa Claus. He and other staff members researched Santa at the society's archives and library. "St. Nicholas' strong reputation throughout Europe eventually brought him to the New World in the early 19th century," said Amos Loveday, chief curator at the society. "Many who have searched the records believe that it was the Dutch who were responsible for creating the original Santa Claus and bringing him to America." He said Santa Claus is a derivation of the Dutch word for St.

Nicholas, SinterKlaus, and first appeared in New York, which has several Dutch settlements. It was the Dutch version that Washington Irving used to popularize Santa Claus in his books. "Irving's Santa Claus who is much like my St. Nicholas character would hardly be recognized today," Taylor said. After Irving, Santa's most important friend probably was Clement Moore, a New York minister who wrote "A Visit from St. Nicholas." "It was this little poem that really shaped the modern Santa Claus," Taylor said. Cartoonist Thomas Nast, who worked for Harper's Illustrated Weekly in the late 19th century, further developed the Santa Claus legend. He rounded out Santa's personality by giving him a home at the North Pole and developed him as a children's pen pal.

Loretta Lynn attended the dedication ceremony Saturday at Johnson Central High School.

The winding highway, which stretches from Florida to Michigan, has long been the main route north for Eastern Kentuckians seeking a better life. As a teen-age bride, Lynn herself took the highway trie first time she left Butcher Hollow, a small mountain community near Paints-ville where she was raised. "We went to a little cabin that was only about 18 miles from home," she said at a reception after the dedication ceremony. "But for me it was like going to the other side of the world." White said he had been an investor and had minimal involvement in two federally subsidized housing projects on the city's southeast side. A document written Feb. 12, 1985, by George James, a former Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority director, suggests that White was not simply a passive investor, a Sunday report in the Cleveland Plain Dealer said.
