The group, which includes three instrumentalists, made its debut in 1962, in New York City.

The New York engagement was followed by a tour to 30 cities in the United States and Canada. The Milwaukee Journal said, "These singers are folk singers only in the sense that the Moiseyev Dancers of Russia are folk dancers they start with basic folk patterns and they embellish them with the most professional variations, I discipline and artistry." As a result of the success of their initial tour, the group niade a coast-to-coast tour in I the United States and Canada the following year. With the successful completion of this tour, the group was again booked for a tour of 102 concerts last season, as well as for 1967-68. Tlie group was founded by Robert De Cormier, a versatile musician who has made his mark as a composer, arranger and conductor. A graduate of the Juilliard School of Music in New York, he gained nationwide fame through his work as conductor and arranger for Harry Belafonte.

Before forming his own group, he was arranger and conductor of the Belafonte Folk Singers. De Cormier has been rep- resnted as a composer on and off Broadway. As an arranger, he has been active in the theater, the concert hall, radio, television and in the recording business. In the summer of 1962, he presented a series of 10 half-hour television programs over the BBC in England and was invited to return for a second and third series. Songs are presented from the United States, England, Scotland, Ireland, Norway, Russia, Poland, Croatia, French Canada, Africa and the West Indies. The De Cormier Folk Singers bring the resources of the theater to the art of singing; movement is fused with song and lighting enhances the mood.
