The easiest way to get corn at the right moisture for storing as high moisture corn is to harvest early. Corn combines and picker-shellers do a'dandy job of handling the corn at the preferred 25 to 30% moisture level. Many'farmers need to harvest both shelled corn and ear corn. They shell early in the season to fill silos with high moisture corn, then exchange the shelling unit for a husking bed and finish their harvest. Corn can be stored either as shelled corn or ground ear corn. The ground ear corn shouldn't spoil as easily as other forms since it will pack better. The same is true of cracked shelJ corn. There does not appear to be an advantage to fine grinding. Any conventional grinder should do a good job for you. Small grain bins can be adapted to storing high moisture grain. Purdue University trials have shown that it is economical to store in these bins. Illinois data indicates the annual cost to be about 6.7c per bushel, which compares favorably with the low-cost conventional silo. The bins must be lined with paper and then with 6 mil plastic in the form of a bag. Bolts are reversed to eliminate danger of punctures. Conventional concrete stave or tile silos need more attention to do a good job of handling high moisture corn. Spoilage may be excessive unless you make the silo as airtight as possible. Seal all the doors to eliminate air leaks. Use 6 mil polyethylene plastic to cover and seal the - grain unless you plan to start feeding immediately. Conventional silos cost less to build and the annual costs are also lower thanVairtight silos, according to Illinois University.
