"When we stopped him at the line, he just went over us. LSU wide receiver Todd Kin BY BILL FORD The Cincinnati Enquirer One of these days, the Lions of Mount St. Joseph College are going to learn college football is a 60-minute game. Not 30 minutes, not 59 minutes, but a full hour.

Because they played only 30 minutes Saturday, they lost, 32-14, to Hanover College of Indiana. The Lions committed seven turnovers. They trailed almost from the very beginning when Hanover safety Lonnie Oldham forced quarterback Rob Paff to fumble out of the end zone for a two-point safety. That was the first series executed by the Lions. By chen caught five passes for 145 yards.

"I was impressed with what I saw of Kinchen on film," Walker said. "And he didn't disappoint me. He played awfully well. McClain in the end zone. Freshman fullback Jerry Niffe-negger scored on a three-yard run and Jeff Langdon, carried as a linebacker, made his first-ever catch for a touchdown from 25 yards away for the TD tallies.

"Their line did a superb job of keeping us from him (quarterback Sampson)," said Pont. "We came within a half-step so many times, but that's the name of the game." Pont said he noticed on the practice field about midweek that the Lions had begun to lose their edge, unlike last week's emotional lidlifter in which they made no mistakes. "I could tell by Wednesday that they were losing their edge," he said. "I'll tell you, though, the good thing about a game like this is we can get better." The fumble that hurt Miami occurred early in the third quarter after the Miami defense had held on the first series. Miami's Bob Clark had trouble handling Brian Griffith's punt.

LSU cornerback Corey Raymond recovered the fumble at the Miami 19. Four plays later, Williams scored his third touchdown of the game to make it 21-7 with 10:34 left in the third quarter. A minute later, the Tigers were on their way back for more. A 35-yard punt by the Redskins' Jon Valente gave LSU good field position again at the LSU 40. An 18-yard pass from Sol Graves to Todd Kinchen and a costly Miami penalty set up yet another scoring run for Williams.

This time, Williams scored on a 3-yard run and tied an LSU school record. Ml. SI. Joseph. BY ROBIN FAMBROUGH Enquirer Contributor BATON ROUGE, La.

Miami University, returning to the scene of its major upset in 1986, played Louisiana State tough for three quarters here Saturday night before bowing to the Tigers, 35-7. The Redskins held a 7-6 lead late in the second quarter and trailed only, 14-7, at the half, but a third-quarter Miami fumble of an LSU punt helped open the gates for the Tigers. LSU, looking to rebound from a 4-7 1989 season, is 2-0. Miami is 0-3. "Before the year is over we're going to have a good football team," Miami coach Randy Walker said.

"But we're still fragile. When something happens a bad play or a fumble on a punt it hurts us. "As far as our football team is concerned, I'm not sure the score indicates the amount of improvement we made." Miami managed 234 yards offense, including 142 yards rushing. Quarterback Jim Clement, who scored Miami's only touchdown, was 9-of-23 passing for 92 yards and three interceptions. "I know we lost, 35-7, but we made some improvements," said Elder High product Dennis Pen-derghast, who led the Redskins in rushing with 54 yards on 21 carries.

"They (Tigers) are good. In the second half, they came after us. We made a couple of mistakes and we couldn't execute." LSU senior tailback Harvey Williams rushed for 71 yards on 18 carries and four touchdowns. His four rushing TDs tied an LSU record set in 1977 by Charles Alexander (a former Cincinnati Bengal) against Oregon and also tied in 1984 by Dalton Hilliard against Kentucky. halftone, it was 26-0.

"If this was a veteran club, I'd be inside tearing the walls down," Lions coach John Pont said. "But from what I saw, we'll play good football (from here in)." The game, at Oak Hills High School, drew a capacity 4,126 fans. Fullback Steve Kunselman scored for Hanover on a 1-yard run and gathered in an 11-yard pass from quarterback Mike Sampson for another score. Brian Glesing scored the other two on pass receptions, one a 46-yarder from Sampson and the other a spectacular one-handed grab from 35 yards out from backup quarterback Dave McClain.
