company JOPLIN (AP) Atlas Powder Co plant here and the company's other plants nationwide have been sold to a British company Imperial Industries Ltd of London bought the plants for $193 million IATUS of the staff A low power television station will begin broadcasting June 4 from the roof of the Tiger Kensington General manager Jim Knrpowicz said KONQ TV Channel 2 will offer a mix of old movies nnd commercial programs during the day and the Na tlonal Collego Television network at night The 10 vvatt station will have a strong signal within the city limits but "much outside the city and you won't pick us up" he said The station will rebroadcast KO MU's pm newscast at 7 pm and its 10 pm news at 10:30 Karpowicz said "It allows us another outlet to have people see our news" KOMU gen eral manager Tom Gray said The station will also make "Pepper and riends" and "Missouri orum" available for rebroadcast Gray said just look at other program ming as it goes along" KOMU might also work with the new station on public affairs pro gramming in the future Gray said particularly things that are of local interest but necessarily make the newscast because of time constraints" rom 7:30 pm to 8 pm Karpow icz plans to offer local programming Initially it will include some syndi cated fare but the long range plan is to save that time slot "for things that are locally produced or at least of lo cal interest" At 1 1 pm the station will join Na tional College Television a network that features student produced soap operas comedies and music videos At 4 am the station will switch back to old movies The station has a field unit and Karpowicz is considering covering high school football and basketball games he said and maybe city coun cil meetings Karpowicz 34 received his bache degree in anthropology from the University of Missouri in 1981 His father Anthony Karpowicz the company president came up through the radio ranks in St Louis He now owns a low power radio sta tion in Naples la construction license was approved in July 1989 Its translator is mounted on an existing tower on the roof of the Kensington 23 Eighth St The tower is owned by George Thomas who rc transmits a Kansas City easy listening station from there The station has applied for a Jef ferson City license from the ederal Communications Commission Chan nel 2 will be carried by Capital Cable in the county Discussions are still under way with TCI Cable Karpowicz who has produced films for the state Department of Conservation Cable News Network and other organizations said his sta tion could provide a talk but little action?
