Mass will be said at 7:30 p.m, BY JACK HICKS The Cincinnati Enquirer Albert Battaglia, a trainer for athletes ranging from major league baseball players to jockeys, died Sunday in his Mount Adams home.

Mr. Battaglia, 66, suffered from emphysema. A career Navy man, Mr. Battaglia began working as an athletic trainer with the Quantico Marine Base track and field team. He was later transferred to the U.S.

Naval Academy at Annapolis, and served as an athletic trainer there before retiring from the Navy in 1967. Mr. Battaglia worked as a trainer for a professional soccer team in Baltimore, then joined the Cincinnati Reds as an assistant trainer in Milford, Tuesday, March 28 at the early 1970s, said his daughter, Anna Louise Burton of Mount Adams. Her father left the Reds after a few years, and began working as a trainer for jockeys at River Downs, Turfway Park and Keeneland race tracks in Cincinnati and Kentucky before retiring four years ago because of his health, Burton said. A native of Italy who was reared in Mount Adams, Mr.

Battaglia was especially fond of jockeys, Burton said. "He loved the jockeys. He really thought a lot of them. He had lots of stories to tell about the race tracks." Young Funeral Home, 7345 Hamilton Avenue, Mt. Healthy, Tuesday 5-7 P.M. If so desired, remem Tuesday, March 28 from ROSEMEYER advance of the vote." Marsh explained that Riffe's comment concerned his uncommitted position in the present session of the General Assembly before the March 15th vote. Attendees split Some who attended the fundraiser said the event was held to boost the chances of the casino bill. "The only reason I would have contributed is because it was earmarked to help the casino venture to fruition," said William Rieth a Lorain insurance agent and a Republican.

"I assumed it was just to see if there was any influence he could have on passage" of the casino bill, said Howard Jesko, an Avon Lake accountant, who said Koziura asked him to buy a ticket to the event. But Stanley Pijor, president of Lorain National Bank, said the fund-raiser "was totally apart and separate" from the community's lobbying effort. Pijor said giving to Riffe "was just good business," a practice he defined as helping "anybody who can help Lorain County." Developer Alan Spitzer, president of Spitzer Great Lakes has predicted creation of a complex anchored by Ohio's first casino could bring some 3,000 jobs to Lorain. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS AKRON, Ohio Ohio House Speaker Vernal Riffe Jr. accepted political donations amounting to $7,700 from 66 contributors one day last August in Lorain and on the same day went public as a supporter of legislation to authorize a casino in the Lake Erie port city.

The gambling measure passed in the House March 15 and is awaiting Senate action. Riffe, D-New Boston, said through a member of his staff that he had no position on the casino bill until he voted for it March 15. The bill would permit establishment of a single casino in Lorain on the banks of the Black River as the heart of a large commercial, entertainment and hotel development. Lorain voters would have to vote in favor of the casino before it could open. Far from home Rep.

Joseph F. Koziura, D-Lo-rain, sponsor of the bill, set up a fund-raiser for Riffe last Aug. 30, even though Riffe's home district is on the opposite end of the state from Lorain. Campaign finance reports of the Riffe Election Committee reveal the fund-raiser produced 66 contributions amounting to $7,700. In newspaper stories the next day, Riffe was quoted as saying regarding the casino proposal: "I A.M.

"It wasn't what you would call a major fund-raiser," Koziura said.

"I think I only raised about 10 grand, and for the speaker that's no big deal." THE ASSOCIATED PRESS CANTON, Ohio An undercover police officer's purchase of an adult-oriented book from a young man working his way through college has set the stage for an attempt to establish standards for obscenity. The downtown store and the store's clerk, Patrick Burkhardt, 23, are being used by city officials and police to establish new community standards on obscenity that could close down Canton's two adult bookstores. One policeman said the city would pattern its prosecution after successful efforts in Cincinnati and Hamilton County, where adult bookstores and X-rated videocas-settes have been banned for about 15 years.

X-rated videos, handcuffs, whips and sexual paraphernalia. She said neither store sells material depicting children or animals, and that both stores do not admit anyone under age 21. "It is the ACLU's position that people should be able to purchase what they want," said Elinor Alger, acting legal director for the Ohio ACLU in Columbus. "If they're old enough to vote and do all the other things that adults do, they're old enough to decide what they want to read and look at. "By the same token, no one is being forced to look at them against their will," she said.

"One set of people shouldn't make determinations about what other people can ot can't read or look at." The magazine, which shows explicit pictures of a woman having sex with two men, has been called obscene by Municipal Judge Loren E. Souers and Lt. Thomas Thomas of the Canton-Stark County Criminal Intelligence Unit and Vice Squad. "I think it's offensive and degrading to women," said Thomas. "I don't feel it has any educational value." The manager of one of the bookstores and a spokeswoman for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) argue that people are entitled to read what they want.

Christine Beadle said customers at the Market Street News and Tower Book Store include prominent local lawyers, judges, doctors, secretaries and others who can afford the high-priced magazines, NEWSPAPER IN EDUCATION For information about The Enquirer and The Post's Newspaper in Education program call our NIE Coordinator at 369-1717.
