Colerain used a constantly-changing defense and an uncharacteristically poor shooting night from Oak Hills Monday night to upset the Highlanders, the No. 3 team in the city, 58-54 in the Oxford Division I sectional at Mil-lett Hall. Oak Hills was done in by poor perimeter shooting. Scott Klingen-beck had just sue points, and Aaron Nichols finished with just three a 3-point goal late in the fourth quarter. "It seems kind of funny, but the kids really believed we could win this game," Colerain coach Mike Daniel said.

"And the coaches did, too. I thought we had a good game plan." That plan included keeping Oak Hills off the offensive boards (Colerain did) and constanly switching defensive alignments. "We didn't want to give them the same look each time down the floor," Daniel said. "If they get into a rhythm, they can kill you. We tried to take that rhythm away." The pitcher, who batted right-handed exclusively last year, hit a home run in practice while batting left-handed. Jackson, who throws left-handed, is trying to become a switch-hitter.

"I'm doing it for two reasons," he explained. "First, I'm doing it to protect my (pitching) arm (since the left arm faces the pitcher when batting right-handed). Second, sometimes when I swung right-handed last year, I muscled up. I found it put a lot of strain on my left shoulder sometimes." Last season, Jackson hit .144 (13-for-90) with six RBI. Franco's hitting nothing to brag about Other pitchers don't take hitting quite as seriously.

John Franco, for one, couldn't resist trotting out some good-natured cracks about his own ability. "Hey, let me get all my at-bats right now," Franco shouted. The NL's Fireman of the Year had only one official at-bat last season. He is 2-for-16 lifetime. "I flied out," he recalled of the at-bat, "deep to short.

They traded the guy the next day." Franco wasn't kidding about that. The pitcher, Pittsburgh's Barry Jones, was traded the next day. "They should have released the guy," shouted Reds' Vice PresidentPublicity Jim Ferguson. "They almost did they traded him to the White Sox," Franco said.
