It lets people switch souls and step into new personas. So now let's meet Jill Schulz at two points in her life. At 8 tonight on Channel 9, she stars in CBS' It's the Girl in the Red Truck, in a classic role.

She's the dream blonde, the one our hero loves from afar. Never mind the fact that our hero is animated and a dog. (He's Spike, Snoopy's brother, created by her dad, Charles Schulz.) She's still covering ground trod in other films by Christie Brinkley, Suzanne Sommers and Nicolette Sheridan. She's the long-haired blonde, the impossible love. And that's a long stretch from the persona of old.

When I met Jill Schulz in 1980, she was everyone's image of the kid next door. She was a skating star, small, short-haired and sweet-spirited. In the touring Ice Follies, she was a featured skater. On the ice, she showed considerable skill while soloing to a difficult jazz number. Off the ice, she was your image of Charlie Brown's kid sister.

Her skaterly frame 5-foot-2, 103 pounds was tucked inside a bright, fluffy sweater. Her face and manner suggested gentle fragility. Living on the road at 22, she wasn't dating anyone. She spent her time talking with friends and visiting shopping malls; she talked easily about the joys of her early life. Her dad is a man of serene simplicity, she said.

"Whenever he goes into an ice cream parlor, he'll always order one scoop and it will always be vanilla. Even if this is at Baskin-Robbins." And her California childhood was the same. She began riding horses at she was "always playing baseball with the family or with the neighbor kids."
