Portable shelters such as these have many uses. Here they furnish shade to sows and their litters on pasture during the summer. They can also be used around the buildings during other times of the year. Note that the buildings are painted white to reflect heat. Too often sows farrowing during late summer and early fall are neglected. Good care is just as important during this period as any other. Don't allow your sows to farrow in unprotected areas of a pasture. This increases your chances of baby pig losses. At the same time it reduces your profit prospects on a cyclical declining hog market. Here you see a "snifter" which is a duct thru which cold air is piped to the farrowing stall. This method of cooling allows the sow to inhale cool air into her lungs where it will do the most good. Compared with conventional air conditioning, a smaller cooling unit is needed and you don't get drafts and dust. Chances are the milk flow of sows during late summer and early fall may not equal what it would in later months. To make sure that your young pigs will gain fast, it may be advisable to creep feed them. A feeder like the one pictured allows the pigs to get at the feed but keeps the sow out.
