C8 THE CINCINNATI ENQl IRERThursday. August 26. 1993 Clerk of Court Notices Clerk of Court Notices Clerk of Court Notices Legal Advertising Legal Advertising Legal Advertising 'Miami women' calendar taken off store shelves Students in Oxford say it is sexist BY JENNIFER BEYERSDORF Enquirer Contributor and The Associated Press OXFORD, Ohio Two Oxford bookstore operators said they have stopped selling "The Women of Miami Calendar" after Miami University students protested, saying the calendar was sexist. The calendar, featuring women in bathing-suit poses, was available for just a few days before the two bookstores removed it. Miami officials said the calendars' producer had not asked permission to use the university's name on the product.

"We didn't know anything about it," university spokesman Richard Little said Wednesday. But the university will not seek any action against the individuals involved. "We are not in the censorship business," Little said. Donna Briggs, a junior resident assistant at Miami who organized the protest, said the calendar is offensive to all the women of the university. "When the women of Miami became singled out, we decided to ask local businesses to respect us and remove it from their shelves," Briggs said.

Junior Sarah Ford, one of about 20 to 30 students protesting the two said the calendar could add to the problems of campus date rape and sexual harassment. John DuBois, manager of the family-owned DuBois Bookstore, said the calendar is "temporarily off the shelves to review the situation." DuBois said his store had several hundred calendars and sold more than 50 before managers pulled them Tuesday: Bob Smith, manager of Fol-let's Miami Co-op Bookstore, said he sold about 10 of the 48 he had in stock. "I told them before there was probably going to be a segment of the community that would not be happy and if there were any problems, I would pull them," Smith said. Ford said she and other protesters applauded the managers' decisions. "We accomplished what we wanted in terms of getting our message out and having our voices heard," she said.

Miami graduate Farren Murphy of FM Productions the company that produced the calendar, said he found out about the boycott after he went to pick up some calendars from DuBois for distribution elsewhere. "If no one bought my calendar because they didn't like it or didn't want to do it, that's fine," Murphy said. "But for people not to get it because someone wants to force their views on somebody else, that's wrong." Murphy said his company plans to publish a "Men and Women of Miami" calendar next year.
