Out FOXed: Mark Elliott, one of the city's brighter morning voices, was fired by WOFX-FM (94.9 mHz) Thursday. Sad as it is, it's no great surprise after the station changed call letters (from WLLT-FM, format and program directors in July. When the FCC learned about the move, it granted "the WIZ" special temporary authority to operate at the new height on reduced power on Sept. 9. The "WIZ" has since applied for increased power, from its present 1.05 kilowatts back up to its original 1.25 kilowatts, Anderson says. "I'm optimistic it will be approved," Anderson says. The WIZ-ardry has infuriated Peter Eden, WBLZ-FM general manager, who competes directly with the "WIZ." Edens says, in such cases, the FCC often levies fines and orders the station immediately to lower its signal.

"If I got caught doing this, they would have shut me down as soon as they found out about it and forced me to move it back down the tower," Eden says. Eden says his attorneys will lobby against the permanent power increase. It turned out their "raise" was actually a clever ploy to explain why the station temporarily shut down Aug. 14, so the station's signal could be raised 40 feet on its radio tower.

Well now, as Paul Harvey would say, it's time for the rest of the story: It turns out the antenna increase wasn't such a smart move after all because the "WIZ" never bother asking the Federal Communication Commission for permission to improve its antenna. Not only did the "WIZ" act illegally, the station also didn't reduce its power when it made the move. (The FCC always orders lower power to compensate for the new height.) Since then, things have happened rapidly. While the FCC has investigated complaints lodged by competitor WBLZ-FM, station manager Reggie Brown was fired by "WIZ" owners Inter Urban Broadcasting. Kernie Anderson, from WBMX-FM in Chicago, is the new vice president and general manager.

Anderson confirms that before his arrival, the "WIZ" signal was raised about 40 feet on the Price Hill radio tower owned by WSAI- TV highlights Evening 8:00 (9) (7) Newhart: Dick and Joanna's plans to sing together in the town's new glee club go awry when only one of them is accepted.
