THE CINCINNATI ENQUIRER Wednesday, February 24, 1993 Obituaries Sister Loretta She had been teacher in BY SHARON MORGAN The Cincinnati Enquirer Sister Loretta Lanahan believed in the Montessori teaching methods and used them to enhance her students' self-esteem during a teaching career that spanned more than four decades, said Sister Judith Wesels, a friend for 30 years. "She was a gentle person who loved her she said. Sister Lanahan, formerly Sister Margaret Joseph, died Monday, at the Mount Notre Dame Health Center in Reading, after a long illness. She was 76. For 37 years, Sister Lanahan taught in Cincinnati schools at St.

Augustine downtown; Cardinal Pacelli in Mount Lookout; St. Richard in Mount Airy; St. James in Wyoming; and Lanahan area for 37 years Summit Boys School and Summit Country Day School in East Walnut Hills. For the last seven years, Sister Lanahan tutored in the Billiart Reading Center at Mount Notre Dame. Prior to teaching in Cincinnati, she taught five years in Illinois.

She also taught at St. Joseph Academy in Columbus. Survivors include three sisters, Bernadette Lanahan of Washington, D.C., and Sister Margaret Lanahan and Sister Loyola Marie Lanahan, both of Reading. Mass of Christian burial was said Tuesday at Mount Notre Dame. Burial was in Mount Notre Dame Cemetery.

Shirley Evans, 79 Railroader served fellow war veterans BY STEVE HOFFMAN The Cincinnati Enquirer Shirley Evans' life encompassed two parts: his 30-year career as a railroader and his 43 years as a member of veterans organizations. Mr. Evans died Monday in his Linwood home of 42 years.

He was 79. He had been active and healthy until December, 1991, when he required a four-way heart-bypass operation, his family said. "He had a good sense of humor," said his son, Edward Evans. "He liked to tell jokes, and he always tried to make everyone happy and cheerful." Mr. Evans was a railroad car mechanic and retired from Conrail in 1976.

He was born in Kentucky, and he served five years in the Army during World War II, reaching the rank of sergeant and serving in the infantry and with medics in Italy. Mr. Evans and his wife of 51 years, Cleta Mae Holland Evans, were active volunteers at the Veterans Administration hospitals in Cincinnati and Fort Evans a traffic crash in 1979. Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. today at Moore Funeral Home, 6708 Main Newtown.

A Disabled American Veterans service will be held at 8 p.m. at the funeral home. A second service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. American Legion Post 406 will have a burial service at noon Thursday at Batavia Union Cemetery, Old Ohio 32, Batavia.

Williams Sharonville man chemical firm executive BY SHARON MORGAN The Cincinnati Enquirer James M. Williams, vice president of a chemical firm, died of cancer Sunday at his Sharonville residence.

He was 65. "Jim was a fair person who loved people," said his wife, Joyce. Mr. Williams had worked as a sales representative, sales manager, and general and regional manager before being promoted to vice president of Chemcentral Corp. Mr.

Williams began his career in 1950 as a sales trainee at the Chemcentral branch in Chicago, from which he eventually returned to Cincinnati. He moved back to Chicago in 1986 as executive vice president of the corporation and chairman of the executive committee. After 37 years with the firm, Mr. Williams retired in December, 1987. The one-year intensive drug-treatment program includes outpatient counseling and frequent drug testing. Treatment costs are on a sliding scale, and the county pays for those who can't afford it. If offenders stay clean for a year, the drug charges are dismissed, said Jose Fernandez, the assistant state attorney assigned to Dade County's drug court. The program so far seems to be successful in reducing recidivism, he said. About of the 1,800 people who made it through the program haven't been back to court on new drug charges.

Judge Thomas Crush of Hamilton County Common Pleas Court called Yates' approach "radical" because it treats a crime as a social problem. While Crush said he favors any measure that would reduce his caseload between 80 and 100 cases a month he questioned the legality of establishing a drug court anywhere in Ohio.
