Their lives at a crossroads, the brothers wanted somehow to combine Rod's writing skills and Dan's marketing experience. So they brainstormed: books and tapes; books and dolls; books and . . . Nintendo. Bingo. Barr Entertainment was born. Dan is CEO; Rod is president. They work out of a small Blue Ash office in a building occupied by a roofing company. Prints from Dan's defunct mail-order company adorn their walls. "One of the obstacles we heard early on from the experts was how kids don't like to read," Dan says. "Especially Nintendo players. They don't read the instruction manuals, they just play the game." The Barrs thought otherwise. "(Kids) like to read stuff that appeals to them," Dan says. "What we've done is combine a great story, cool characters and awesome illustrations. It's non-stop excitement." Playing games for work Rod wrote the first draft of the story last January. Both brothers spent untold hours playing video games and learning about features such as fantasy zones, power-ups and warp areas. They eventually made a deal with American Softworks to publish their game. They also hooked up with a software developer a company of computer experts who create what's on the video screen. But the Barrs remained in control of each stage of the design. Communicating with their New York illustrators and California software developer via floppy disks and faxes, the brothers fine-tuned the characters. The game at first had a Revolutionary War theme. "It was originally 'Nathan and the Sword of the Revolution,' " Rod notes. "Then it was 'The Rebel.' Then 'Flashpoint.' Then . . ." They finally settled on Storm Jaxon for the name of the hero who steals Skuljagger's sword, then hacks and slashes his way through a slew of bad guys. "Eventually we decided to name (the game) after the bad guy, which was Skulpepper at that point," Rod says. Too tame, they felt. More brainstorming. Skul-bones, Skultrash . . . Skuljagger. "There were weeks of that kind of work," Dan says. The Barrs, who've played in several bands, also wrote the game's music. California shakin' In June, with a deadline looming, the Barrs flew to California to hammer out details with the soft ware developer. Picky stuff, such as how high a character jumps, and whether he slides when coming to a stop. They expected to be there five davs. It turned into five weeks, 12 to 14 hours a day "basically living, breathing, eating Skuljag- eer." Rod savs. Now the question is, what kind of rinnles will Skuliaeeer make in the Suoer Nintendo eame market? Reviews from industry magazines have been favorable. 1 he brothers say toy and cartoon companies have exnressed interest.
