Maleeva, 21, of Bulgaria, won the Virginia Slims of Kansas tournament this year. She is seeded seventh for Wimbledon beginning next week.

Three Bearcats sign Three University of Cincinnati baseball players selected in the June 1-2 amateur draft have signed professional contracts, two of them with the Chicago White Sox. The White Sox signed junior outfielder John Zaksek and pitcher Ron Stephens. The Philadelphia Local sports Phillies signed UC outfielder Joe Tenhundfeld.

Zaksek, a 15th-round selection from Youngstown, Ohio, hit .327 for the ISearcats this past season, with eight home runs, 33 RBI and 12 stolen bases. Stephens, a 30th-round selection from Wheeling, W.Va., was 6-5 with two saves and a 3.84 earned-run average. Tenhundfeld, a 57th-round selection from Brunswick, Ohio, hit .275 with five homers, 24 RBI and 10 stolen bases. McNick's Mayer signs Andy Mayer, catcher for 1988 Class AA runner-up McNicholas, has signed a national letter of intent to play for the University of Oklahoma. tlett, an assistant at Kansas from 1967 through 1971, has coached the Mountaineers since the 1978-79 season.

He has an overall record of 333-146 and is 207-102 in Morgan-town, including last season's 18-14 record. He was head coach at UC before moving to WVU. A Munich magazine quoted 1988 Olympic downhill ski champion Marina Kiehl of West Germany as saying she is retiring from competition. Jim Abbott, the one-handed pitcher from the University of Michigan, received the 1988 Tan-queray Amateur Athlete Achievement Award for 1988. Abbott, the first baseball player to receive the Sullivan Award as the top amateur athlete in the United States, was Big Ten Player of the Year, going 9-3 with a 3.32 earned-run average and 82 strikeouts in 97'23 innings. Penguins fire Creamer The Pittsburgh Penguins of the NHL fired Pierre Creamer after one season as head coach and launched a search for his replacement. Creamer led the Penguins to a 36-35-9 record, the team's first winning season in nine years, but still not good enough to make the Stanley Cup playoffs. The Penguins finished last in the Patrick Division. "They wanted to find a big dummy for not making the playoffs and they chose me," Creamer said. "We had a good, positive year in Pittsburgh." Herb Brooks is out as Minnesota North Stars coach, at least for now, and Jack Ferreira is in as general manager, the NHL team said.

North Stars co-owners George and Gordon Gund said that not only has Ferreira been hired to succeed resigned general' manager Lou Nanne, but all personnel "in the hockey department" have been fired.
