Maleeva, 21, of Bulgaria, won the Virginia Slims of Kansas tournament this year. She is seeded seventh for Wimbledon beginning next week. Three Bearcats sign Three University of Cincinnati baseball players selected in the June 1-2 amateur draft have signed professional contracts, two of them with the Chicago White Sox. The White Sox signed junior outfielder John Zaksek and pitcher Ron Stephens. The Philadelphia Local sports Phillies signed UC outfielder Joe Tenhundfeld. Zaksek, a 15th-round selection from Youngstown, Ohio, hit .327 for the ISearcats this past season, with eight home runs, 33 RBI and 12 stolen bases. Stephens, a 30th-round selection from Wheeling, W.Va., was 6-5 with two saves and a 3.84 earned-run average. Tenhundfeld, a 57th-round selection from Brunswick, Ohio, hit .275 with five homers, 24 RBI and 10 stolen bases. McNick's Mayer signs Andy Mayer, catcher for 1988 Class AA runner-up McNicholas, has signed a national letter of intent to play for the University of Oklahoma. tlett, an assistant at Kansas from 1967 through 1971, has coached the Mountaineers since the 1978-79 season. He has an overall record of 333-146 and is 207-102 in Morgan-town, including last season's 18-14 record. He was head coach at UC before moving to WVU. Indiana basketball coach Bob Knight has filed for a license to marry an Oklahoma woman who coached her girls high basketball school team to three state titles, according to published reports. Knight, 47, and Karen V'ieth Edgar, 41, of Kingfisher County, Okla., applied for the license here last month. Elsewhere . . . Carmen Salvino of Chicago nipped Dick Weber of St. Louis by two pins to take the fifth-round lead in the $100,000 Professional Howlers Association Showboat Senior Invitational at Las Vegas. Sal-vino, a PBA Hall of Famer with 18 tournament victories, had a pinfall of 6,910, including 30 bonus pins for each of his 10 victories in 12 matches on Tuesday. Weber, a 29-time PBA champion and a Hall of Fame and two-time defending champion of this event, had a pin-fall of 6,908. A Munich magazine quoted 1988 Olympic downhill ski champion Marina Kiehl of West Germany as saying she is retiring from competition. "I felt that my motivation was getting weaker, and at the same time, the expectations people had of me were getting greater." the magazine Bunte quoted the 23-year-old racer as saying. Jim Abbott, the one-handed pitcher from the University of Michigan, received the 1988 Tan-queray Amateur Athlete Achievement Award for 1988. Abbott, the first baseball player to receive the Sullivan Award as the top amateur athlete in the United States, was Big Ten Player of the Year, going 9-3 with a 3.32 earned-run average and 82 strikeouts in 97'23 innings. He was a first-round pick by the California Angels in this month's draft, the eighth pick overall. ENQUIRER NEWS SERVICES one man could handle both jobs. Mario Lemieux, the NHL's most valuable player in a media vote, also has been selected the league's most outstanding player by his peers. Lemieux was the runaway 1988 winner of the Lester B. Pearson Award, which is voted on by members of the National Hockey League Players' Association. In the Pearson voting, Lemieux polled 182 votes. Wayne Gretzky was second with 56 votes'. SA welcomes Brown With Mayor Henry Cisne- ros as the head cheerleader, about 500 people turned out to welcome new San Antonio Spurs coach Larry Brown, who apologized for his previous putdown ,of the city. Brown on Monday quit his job at Kansas University to accept a $3.5 million, five-year contract with the Spurs. During his ABA coaching The Philadelphia Eagles prevailed over several other NFL teams to sign Todd Bell, former Middletown High and Ohio State star, to a three-year contract. Hell, 29, was released by Chicago May 10 after a controversial six-year career with the Bears. Buddy Ryan, who coached Bell four seasons with the Bears before becoming head coach in Philadelphia, said he expected to use the 212-pound Bell as the starting right linebacker. But he said he also might use him as a safety. "He can play more than one position," Ryan said. "He'll put pressure on everybody. He's a Pro Bowl safety who can play linebacker." Jim Kensil ended his 27-year association with the. NFL when he resigned as president of the New York Jets, citing health reasons. Kensil, saying he had "slight heart problems," quit the post he held for 11 years. Penguins fire Creamer The Pittsburgh Penguins of the NHL fired Pierre Creamer after one season as head coach and launched a search for his replacement. Creamer led the Penguins to a 36-35-9 record, the team's first winning season in nine years, but still not good enough to make the Stanley Cup playoffs. The Penguins finished last in the Patrick Division. "They wanted to find a big dummy for not making the playoffs and they chose me," Creamer said. "We had a good, positive year in Pittsburgh." Herb Brooks is out as Minnesota North Stars coach, at least for now, and Jack Ferreira is in as general manager, the NHL team said. North Stars co-owners George and Gordon Gund said that not only has Ferreira been hired to succeed resigned general' manager Lou Nanne, but all personnel "in the hockey department" have been fired. Boston Celtics chief scout Ed Badger has joined the Charlotte Hornets as coach-director of basketball administration. Badger's appointment is the first to the coaching staff since Dick Harter was named head coach June 3. He will join the Hornets on July 1. Badger spent five years at the University of Cincinnati, where he compiled a 68-71 mark. He joined the Cleveland Cavaliers as an assistant coach in the 1983-84 season before going to the Celtics.
