Zoo tries to regain standing THE ASSOCIATED PRESS COLUMBUS, Ohio: The Columbus Zoo is trying to regain the professional membership it lost when it exhibited two giant pandas from China. The zoo's membership in the American Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums was suspended for a year after the pandas were imported for a three-month exhibit.

The pandas returned to China Sept. 23. The association, which accredits zoos in the United States, placed a moratorium on short-term panda loans in an effort to save the endangered species. Columbus Zoo officials said they began working on the panda loan in 1985, before the moratorium went into effect. Zoo officials also said the loan generated about $500,000 for endangered species programs.

The federal import permit required that any proceeds from the exhibit be donated to the programs. Sydney Butler, association director, last week said the governing board would consider the zoo's request before Jan. 1. Without membership, the zoo can't be listed in a publication on animal exchanges or the directory of zoos, said Jerry Borin, general manager. Borin said the suspension didn't disrupt Columbus' breeding loan programs with other zoos.

The Columbus Zoo has added Sumatran tigers and Mexican wolves, both of which are in endangered species programs, he said. KORFHAGEN Freda M. (nee Husman), beloved wife of the late Howard F. Head Chili" because it "makes your hair stand up." "I don't go by a recipe," Banderpool said. "I add a little bit of this and a little bit of that and taste it." Unlike some chili-makers, Jerome and Linda Crutcher of Madisonville include beans in their chili. But they deferred to the other competitors in the cook-off and left it out of their batch Sunday. Jay Moore of Taylor Mill, and Scott Merusi of Walnut Hills don't have beans in their chili. They prefer the thick, Texas stew chili.

They add corn flour to make it thick. "We add ingredients until we get something both of us like," Merusi said. Shiska Haus, a catering business in Walnut Hills, served "1,000 proof Bourbon Chili" at a booth Sunday. Actually, there's practically no alcohol in it. A bourbon flavoring is used, said Walt Alexander, owner of Shiska Haus.

Alexander likes his chili hot and spicy. "You have to put just the right amount of spices in it to make it sing to the customer," he said. "You make it simmer slowly for a long time so that it will unleash its flavors." BY STEVE KEMME The Cincinnati Enquirer There's more than one way to make a good pot of chili. In fact, there are as many different theories and recipes about chili-making as there were cooks at the annual Gold Star ChiliFest downtown Sunday. Dan Segal of Montgomery participated in the Too Many Chefs Team Cook-Off, for teams of two to five people.

After he won the cook-off four years ago, he started Chili Dan's, a business that is selling his chili to grocery stores and restaurants. "It was sort of a hobby that turned into a profession," he said. His chili is Texas style, with big chunks of beef. It's a contrast with Cincinnati style, featuring a chili sauce over spaghetti. Segal has nothing against different styles of chili, but he doesn't like chili that's too hot.

"A lot of people think chili has to be hot to be good," he said. "But if it's too hot, you can't taste it. The trick is getting it just hot enough that it doesn't overpower the taste." Yet Mark Hess of Mount Healthy and his sister, Becky Banderpool of Price Hill, cook very spicy, hot chili. At the cook-off, they called their chili "Troll WILSON Joseph beloved husband of Delia Wilson (nee father of Barbara, Helen, Linda, Louie, Margie, Lonnie, Harold, Jeanette, Joe Jeanie and David, grandfather of 17 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Nr.RAL HOME jm HI-A DIM, HQ cutors contend Ignatow, 54, "has a 25-year history of acts of sexual sadism against women," including Schaefer and Shore-Inlow, whom he dated for about 10 years. Also in court records, prosecutors have filed an article about sexually sadistic criminals written by Hazelwood and two other experts in the field. The 1990 article, published in the Bulletin of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law, said offenders typically are male, hold jobs, often are seen as "solid citizens," plan their offenses carefully, sometimes enlist a partner to assist them, often use sexual bondage on their victims, and when they kill victims take great pains to conceal the corpse. Sometimes, the assaults are so well-planned the offender works from a script, Hazelwood said in the interview. Shore-Inlow told police that, during the two hours Ignatow was assaulting Schaefer, he kept referring to a list on a piece of paper.

The actions of a sexual sadist are so repugnant to most people that they tend to react with disbelief permitting the offender to fool therapists or even juries, Hazelwood said. Win, GOOD KELSCH OAKLEY SQ. 531-01Q5 bearing bouquets of flowers, court records said. But generally, as the relationship progresses, the abuse deepens and often ends with the victim's murder, Hazelwood said. Schaefer disappeared Sept.

24, 1988, after a date with Ignatow. He was arrested in January, 1990, after police found her body buried behind the home of Mary Ann Shore-Inlow, Ignatow's former girlfriend, who confessed to helping Ignatow assault Schaefer, then helping him bury her. Shore-Inlow took the incriminating photographs Ignatow saved. The new owners of Ignatow's former home were aware of his notoriety and called FBI agents when they found the film 10 days ago in a plastic bag. The bag also contained Schaefer's missing jewelry and three rolls of film, police said.
