Tuesday, March 24, 1992 THE CINCINNATI ENQUIRER 01 Robert G. Polk, Springdale Boy Scout leader died while hiking in Ky. with troop BY STEVE KEMME The Cincinnati Enquirer Robert G. Polk, a Boy Scout leader in Springdale, died from a heart attack Saturday after hiking with his Scout troop in Natural Bridge State Park in Slade, Ky. He was 45.

His body was found on a hiking trail about 4 p.m. Saturday, said his wife, Donna. He had no history of heart trouble, she said. "They had hiked all day," she said. "Red River Gorge has pretty steep inclines, and I think he probably overextended himself." Two of his sons, Todd and Greg, are members of the troop and were on the trip.

Mr. Polk, an assistant scoutmaster of Troop 164, was scheduled to start a new job with a new company, Black Rabbit Shoe, in two weeks, his wife said. He had been involved with the Boy Scouts for three years, had helped coach youth baseball teams in Springdale and had been active in parent groups with swim teams in Springdale and Princeton High School. He also loved fishing and hunting. "He really loved teaching things to kids," his wife said.

"If he hadn't been in the profession he was in, he probably would have been a teacher." Mr. Polk, who graduated from the University of Robert Polk Robert Polk Cincinnati in 1974, earned a Bronze Star Medal during two tours of duty in Vietnam with the Air Force. He was a member of Forest Chapel United Methodist Church. The last two years, he worked in management for Frequency Products Inc. in Winton Place.

Also surviving are another son, Tyler; his Lewis and Julia Polk of Colerain Township; a Carol Van Cleve of Middletown; and a brother, of Albany, Ky. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Chapel United Methodist Church, 680 W. Road, Forest Park.

KAUFMAN recalled, because her The Cincinnati Enquirer Nazis killed Ralph B. Falkenstein's parents and his faith, but he rebuilt his life in this country. Mr. Falkenstein, 75, of Deer Park, died Sunday at Jewish Hospital of heart problems. His parents sent him to Switzerland, just steps ahead of the Gestapo, and he reached the United States in 1940.

He spent a year on his sponsor's Virginia poultry farm, joined the U.S. Army and became a U.S. citizen. He was a combat infantryman who rose to master sergeant. After VE Day, he served as an interpreter at the Nuremberg war crimes trials.

The young Jew later learned his father and mother were betrayed by an employee of the family store in Recklinghausen and they died in a Nazi death camp. Eventually, he returned to the United States and his wife, Myrtice Casteel Falkenstein, and started anew. "His life was in this country, and his life was me," she said Monday. "He said, 'You made me smile Mr. Falkenstein never embraced his Judaism actively after the war.

"He just couldn't take it," his wife, a Methodist, explained. "He didn't want any part of it The war did that to him." Nor did he embrace Christianity, she added. They had met in South Carolina while Mr. Falkenstein was at Fort Jackson and married three months later. "My mother was a little upset at first," his wife wasn't pleased that her co-ed daughter was marrying a German whom she'd known so briefly.

Their 50th anniversary would have been June 7. After the war, the young family settled in Cleveland, where Mr. Falkenstein began his career selling women's shoes and managing shoe stores. Ralph Falkenstein They moved to the Cincinnati area in 1955, and Mr. Falkenstein managed Allen's Shoe Store downtown until it closed in 1970.

He then worked at Garcon's Shoes in Kenwood until he retired in 1982. The couple visited Recklinghausen "He was a very strong person," his wife said, but his return involved no rapprochement with the Germans. "He didn't have much use for them." Mr. Falkenstein also is survived by two sons, Ralph B. Jr.

BY ANN JOHNSTON HAAS The Cincinnati Enquirer Esther A. Stenken, 91, who believed staying active kept her young, died Saturday of natural causes at her Covington home. Miss Stenken, who graduated from the Evening College of the University of Cincinnati, had worked 52 years for Fifth Third Bank in Cincinnati. "She was there from when she was 18 until she was 70," said a niece, Carol Beirne of College Hill. Miss Stenken was a past president of the bank's 25 Year Club.

She also had been an officer with the Cincinnati Business and Professional Women's Club. "She still went out for all her meals," Beirne said. "She took a cab. My aunt thought that if you sat home you got old faster." In later life, Miss Stenken's activities revolved around her church, Immanuel United Methodist Church of Lakeside Park. She was a Sunday school teacher and for 16 years was secretary of the administrative board.

Miss Stenken was a past worthy high priestess of Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem No. 10, Covington, and a founder and first president of the Kentucky White Shrine Association. Schools CONTINUED FROM PAGE D-1 suggested the extensive revamping. "These are very difficult times for the Cincinnati Public Schools, and these are very difficult times for me because I know many of these people," Brandt said. Most of those whose contracts aren't renewed won't be out of a job, Brandt said.

They could end up as principals or teachers. State law requires notification by March 31 that contracts won't be renewed. The reorganization is expected to be ready by April 23; administrators will know then whether their positions exist, he said. About 100 central-office positions including 35 staff are expected to be cut. The central office has 132 administrators and 640 staff members.

Implants CONTINUED FROM PAGE D-1 be used as evidence in trial. "All of this was repugnant to us," he said. "It appears they're reaching in and trying to affect the litigation with the $1,200 payment." If Chesley is right, Rubin said Dow Corning "may be interfering not only with the rights of specific members of the plaintiff's class, but may also effect the outcome of this case by destroying evidence." YOUNG Marie, devoted wife of the late Thomas C. Young, beloved mother of Thomas J. Young, Marjorie Meaner and the late Loraine Bricking, also survived by eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren.
