Picayune Item LIESTYLES Sunday November 8 2009 Page 3C Two men one connection faced death to save others Drop in visits from mother in law bothers newlywed They more bombs that were released Afterward Thach figured that Butch had used only sixty rounds of ammu nition for each plane he destroyed He was promoted to lieutenant commander and awarded the highest decora tion of his country the Con gressional Medal of Honor Tragically Butch was killed November 1943 at the age of 29 in the battle for the Gilbert islands in the Pacific He was accidentally shot down by another Amer ican airplane on the first suc cessful night fighter opera tion from a carrier Airport in Chica go is named for this young man who valued the lives of others enough to endanger his own life to save them A statue of Butch is located between Terminals 1 and 2 of the Airport in Chicago Now as for how the two stories are connected Butch was the beloved son of the lawyer who gave his life for his son Dr Stanley Watson hands will stop at late or early hour Now is the only time you own Live love toil with a will Place no faith in time or the clock may soon be The story of the pilot is another example of a man who was willing to put his life on the line to save others Lieutenant Commander Butch was a fighter pilot assigned to the aircraft carrier Lexington in the South Pacific A legend grew up that was partially true but inaccurate on the details rom the official account we learn the real story The carrier Lexington had been assigned the dangerous task of penetrating enemy held waters north of New Ireland rom there her planes were to make a strike at Japanese shipping in the harbor at Rabaul Unfortu nately while still 400 miles from Rabaul the Lexington was discovered by a giant four engine Kawanishi ly ing Boat Lieutenant Com mander John Thach skipper of the Wildcat fighters shot down the Japanese but not before it had radioed the car position That afternoon Comman der Thach led six Wildcats into the air to intercept nine twin engine enemy bombers In the air battle that followed each of the Wildcats destroyed a bomber and damaged two more The anti aircraft guns fin ished off the rest In the meantime nine more Japan ese bombers were reported to be on the way Six Wildcats one of them piloted by Butch roared off the deck to stop them and his wingman spotted the formation of bombers first and dived to try to head them off The other pilots were too far away to reach most of the enemy planes before they released their bombs At this critical moment wingman discovered his guns were jammed and he was forced to turn away Butch stood alone between the Lexington and the bombers At full throttle managed to evade the few he roared into the enemy for mation While tracers from the concentrated fire of the nine bombers streaked around him he took careful aim at the starboard engine of the last plane in the and squeezed his trigger Slugs from the six 50 caliber guns ripped into the Japanese wing and the engine literally jumped out of its mountings The bomber spun crazily toward the sea as guns tore up another enemy plane Then he ducked to the other side of the formation and smashed the port engine of the last Japanese plane there One by one he attacked the oncoming bombers until five had been downed Com mander Thach later reported that at one point he saw three of the bombers falling in flames at the same time By now Thach and the other pilots had joined the fight This was fortunate because was now out of ammunition downed several bombers and the Lexington Ont Day we honor those who endan gered their lives for a noble cause I was impressed with these two men who put their lives on the line to pro tect others One was a lawyer and LA ZvL A 1 LUC UU1CL 4 U11UI 0 the military Sylcated Many years ago' colummsl when Al Capone was the top crime boss in Chicago he promoted every thing from bootlegged booze to prostitution to murder He had a very good lawyer nick named who was so adept at legal maneu vering that he kept Big Al out of jail To show his appreciation Capone provided family a fenced in mansion with live in help and every modem convenience Eddie lived the higi life of the Chicago mob while virtual ly ignoring the crimes that paid for it Eddie had one personal 1 concern however He had a i son that he loved dearly Eddie saw to it that his young son had clothes cars and a good education He also tried to teach his son right from wrong wanted him to be a decent man in spite of his own per sonal involvement with organized crime The fact that he was not giving his son a good examnle was eating Eddie alive inally he reached a difficult decision He decided in order to clear his name he would have to go to the authorities and tell the truth about Al Capone He would have to testify against the mob knowing what the price might be Later that year Easy Eddie was gunned down in the street The police removed from his pockets a rosary a cruci fix a religious medallion and a poem clipped from a magazine which read: clock of life is wound but once and no man has the power to tell just when the 41 Dear Annie: I have been married to a
