C-14PrO football THE CINCINNATI ENQUIRER Sunday, July 12, 1987 NFL logjam unbroken Vikings-Dozier contract didn't set any pattern JMike flm Dodd JP Pro football i'S, St 7 'A yi i'lstf For a few weeks now, NFL general managers and agents for draft choices have been waiting for the breakthrough, the signing of a first-round pick besides Vinny Testaverde. It happened this week with Minnesota and running back D.J. Dozier, but the contract isn't likely to have much effect on the rest of the rookies. The reason? Dozier's deal is not in the standard format. It contains several deferred payments and incentives that'll make it difficult to use it to help establish a market value for the rest of the round.

"It's a hard one to evaluate," said one GM. Dozier reportedly received a signing bonus of about $350,000 less than the $360,000 in the Bengals' opening offer to Jason Buck. But Minnesota also reportedly gave the Penn State running back a $300,000 loan, which will be forgiven in part or in full, depending on his performance. On the surface, it's a two-year deal (plus option year with a salary contingent on his playing time) for about million. But it could be a lot lower if he doesn't play.

Many agents don't think the Dozier contract will break the logjam of unsigned first-rounders. "The Vikings are traditionally the lowest paying team for rookies in the NFL," said Leigh Steinberg, who represents Buck and two other first-rounders. "Mike Lynn (Viking GM) may think this breaks the logjam, but their log has traditionally grown alone, separated from the NFL forest." Agents for first- and second-round picks, meanwhile, met in Los Angeles Friday to discuss the offers from NFL teams. Many of them predict little action until training camps open later in the month. So far, only about 25 of the 335 players picked in the draft have signed.

"I really don't see anything moving (league-wide) until 24 hours before training camp," said Jim Steiner, agent for Cincinnati's second-round choice, corner-back Eric Thomas. "Right before training camp, there'll be a rush of signings of later-round picks. Then there'll be a lull, then another wave of signings (after a week or so)." McMahon throwing well Jim McMahon, whose mini-camp workouts following shoulder surgery were held in private, may be throwing for all to see by the start of training camp. Bob Gajda, who is supervising the Chicago quarterback's rehabilitation training, says he thinks McMahon will be ready to open training camp later this month without restrictions on his throwing. "He's throwing every day now," Gajda said.

"He threw the football 53 yards. He's throwing the ball like a bullet. He looks good." McMahon, who is trying to come back from reconstructive shoulder surgery Dec. 12, will visit his surgeon, Dr. Frank Jobe of Los Angeles, within the next two weeks to get the go-ahead.

High-dollar exit The Browns' release last month of running back Curtis Dickey looks like a salary purge. Dickey, who seemed to adjust to a reserve role last year, was scheduled to make $450,000 this year and $500,000 next year. Those terms were negotiated when he was with the Colts and the Browns picked up the contract when they acquired him on waivers in 1985. Cleveland carried Dickey's $400,000 salary last year, but wasn't willing to pay that this year's tab. Starters Kevin Mack and Earnest Byner are each in the $225,000 range.

The Browns reportedly invited Dickey back, but at half his salary. He declined, was placed on waivers and hasn't been claimed. Signore Esiason Bengals' quarterback Boomer Esiason returned this week from 10 days in Salso Maggiore, Italy, where he teamed with Chargers' head coach Al Saunders in a football camp. "The Italians are passionately in love with football," Esiason said. "We had guys 29 and 30 years old taking their vacations to play in the camp." After about four days of work, the Esiason-Saun-ders team scrimmaged a club ranked third in Italy and lost a close contest five TDs to three.

"At the end," he said, "they dumped Gatorade on me and coach Saunders." Football isn't close to threatening the popularity of soccer in Italy, but the zealots follow the latest developments in the NFL. The level of play still has a long way to go, though. "I'd say Moeller High School could go and beat their best professional team," Esiason said. More laurels for Reg If Reggie Williams can get half as many sacks as he has awards this year, he'll be in the Pro Bowl. The Bengals' linebacker, named NFL Man of the Year in January, did it again last month.

Williams, a consultant for Cincinnati Bell, won a first-place award from the Cincinnati Editors Association in the organization's publications contest. He wrote a series of columns in the Cincinnati Bell employee magazine relating his experience as a Bengal to the principles promoted in the best selling book, The Principles of Excellence. Extra points If Shaun Burdick makes it as the Bengals' punter, he'll be the fifth University of Cincinnati kicking specialist to play in the NFL in recent years. The others are current Denver placekicker Rich Karlis and three ex-pros punter Jeff West (Seattle, San Diego, St. Louis), punter Mike Connell (Washington) and kicker Jim O'Brien (Baltimore, Detroit).

Running back Gary Worthy, the former Wilmington College star and a late cut of the Chicago Bears in 1983, has been signed as a free agent by Buffalo. Worthy was also offered a contract by San Francisco, but chose the Bills because of his association with coach Marv Levy. Worthy played for Levy with the USFL Chicago Blitz.
