B-8SportS THE CINCINNATI ENQUIRER Saturday. September 20. 1986 Barberry Spur wins Little Brown Jug Harness racing THE ASSOCIATED PRESS DELAWARE, Ohio Barberry Spur captured the second jewel in pacing's Triple Crown Friday, winning The Little Brown Jug at the Delaware County Fairgrounds. Barberry Spur, which earlier won the Cane Pace at Yonkers Raceway, needs a victory in Messenger Stake Oct. 4 at Roose-- ay 1 Bearcats CONTINUED FROM PAGE B-l Currey, an offense-oriented boss who leaves most of the defensive work to his assistants.

"We've had some holes to fill," Currey said. "We've had to replace two starting corners (Vincent Car-reker, ineligible; Terry Noble, injured). Our middle linebacker spot (manned by freshmen Darryl Nash and Ron Traut) is improving. "We don't have a lot of confidence defensively right now, and you look at the schedule and it doesn't get easier. What we've done is found ways to win, despite our mistakes." The personnel isn't as bad as the statistics.

UC has a genuine professional prospect in senior linebacker Alex Gordon, a 6-5, 240-pounder who is UC's tackling leader with 11 solos and 11 assists. "I can't imagine a better linebacker than him," said Youngs. There are also Toney Catch-ings, a senior outside backer with 18 tackles and three sacks; John Lewis, a junior safety who has 19 tackles and has filled in well for Noble, and three other vets in the secondary: senior safety Rob Nie-hoff, junior safety Richard Rhodes (last year's top tackier), and senior cornerback Jon Sawyer. There have been injury problems on the line. Defensive right tackle Bob Leshnak, a street-fighter at 5-11 and 231 pounds, was the only usual starter to start last week.

"We're making a lot of little mistakes right now; we don't have everyone set where we want them," said Leshnak. But, we've made some big plays when we had to." "We were subpar physically last week," said Youngs. Four guys didn't practice that much at all." The four: Gordon (shin bruises), end Chris Asbeck (deep thigh bruise), end J.H. Caldwell (Achilles strain) and tackle Tom Szabados (knee, ankle sprain). All except Caldwell should be close to full go this week.

"We took it kind of easy in practice last week, and that affects the way you play in a game," said Youngs. "You don't want people getting hurt any more than they are. We practiced with a lot more intensity this week. "We'll be better. The important thing right now is we're 2-0, and the name of the game is to score more than your opponent." 1 fj 2 i i ill A i The Associated Press win the Little Brown Jug race Friday at Barberry Spur, with Bill O'Donnell in the sulky, leads Souffle to the wire to Delaware, Ohio, with a time of 1 minute, 52 45 seconds Barr takes advantage of playing conditions NATIONAL CO.

Wo stand behind our products with Branca CONTINUED FROM PAGE B-l It is the 26th and final game in the series which has visited every major-league ballpark in America this year. The three-inning game begins at 5:45 p.m. It precedes the Reds-Los Angeles Dodgers game at 7:05 p.m. If history holds true for this Old Timers' Day, the best part will be batting practice at 4:30 p.m. The public is invited to witness that, as sluggers such as Willie Mays, Orlando Cepeda and Joe Torre take aim at the fences.

i Mays was a rookie and in the on-deck circle when Bobby Thomson, the Staten Island Scot, hit the big home run off Branca. But those aren't the players Branca's group seeks to' aid. major-league minimum (salary) today is $60,000 a year," Branca said.

"You've got some guys making $10,000 a game. "When I was playing, $10,000 was a pretty good salary for a season. Nobody on those great Brooklyn Dodger teams I played on was making $60,000 a season not Pee Wee Reese, Carl Furillo, Jackie Robinson, Duke Snider or Roy Campanella." Certainly not Ralph Branca hi- best annual salary was $17,000. Branca won 21 games as a 21-year-old in his first full season in If fi' THE ASSOCIATED PRESS MILWAUKEE Canadian Dave Barr, taking advantage of soft greens and an afternoon starting time, shot a second-round 8-under par 64 Friday for a two-stroke lead in the $400,000 Greater Milwaukee Open. Barr's two-round total of 11-un-der 133 led David Frost and Morris Hatalsky, who coped with fog, rain and wind in the morning to finish at 9-under after 36 holes.

Frost, a second-year PGA Tour player from South Africa, shot a 66 Friday. Hatalsky, a former GMO winner, carded a 67. Four players followed at 8-under 136: Hubert Green, Chris Perry, Tom Byrum and Andy Bean. Byrum was a co-leader Thursday after a first-round 65. Fellow co-leader Jay Delsing faded to 138 with a second-round 73.

Play was delayed for about seven minutes at mid-morning because of fog, and golfers had to contend with intermittent wind, rain and thick mist on the par 72, Tuckaway Country Club course in suburban Milwaukee. That made the course play longer but softened the usually firm, speedy greens at Tuckaway accounting for the low scores. The weather moderated in the afternoon, making for even better scoring conditions. "The moisture has really softened the greens up," said Barr, a non-winner on the PGA Tour this season who is coming off three consecutive second-place finishes on the Canadian professional golf tour. "It actually slowed them down.

They're about the perfect speed for putting," the 34-year-old Barr said. the big leagues. What were 20-win seasons worth to Dwight Gooden and Brett Saberhagen at such a tender age? Branca doesn't cite such examples to elicit sympathy for himself or to ridicule today's players. He knows he was blessed by the opportunity to pitch in the big leagues. And he's making a good salary himself as an executive with a pension-fund company in White Plains, N.Y.

"But not everybody has been so fortunate," Branca said. "There are former players out of work or ill or whose wives are ill and they don't have medical insurance." Branca said he doesn't know how many former big leaguers have fallen on hard times. The investigative arm for the administration of the fund was only recently formed, he said. Four ex-players, however, who applied for assistance and whose financial status have been investigated, will probably be recommended for assistance by Branca, he said. Three of Branca's associates Rusty Staub, Joe Garagiola and Bob Gibson also have votes on determining who shall receive aid.

Their recommendations are turned over to a 19-person controlling board. A long-time goal of Branca's group is to have an Old-Timers' home established for those players in need of such attention. "Of course, we'd want to make sure there's a porch attached so that the old-timers can swap lies," said Branca, smiling. himself." Power, though disappointed by his team's loss, was pleased with his outing. "I feel real good about it," he said.

Slammers sign Suder The Cincinnati Slammers of the Continental Basketball Association signed Duquesne University guard Rick Suder to a 1986 season contract. Terms were not disclosed. Suder scored 1,459 points in four years at Duquesne for an overall per-game average of 13.9 points, including a 20.4 points-per-game average in his senior season.

The 6-foot-4, 195-pound Suder set a Duquesne school record for free-throw shooting percentage by sinking 434 of his 671 shots for an .887 mark.
