Wednesday, April 8, 1987 THE Obituaries Margaret traffic control When Margaret Alta Gaines Fairchild retired in 1967 at Greater Cincinnati Airport, she was the only female air traffic control watch supervisor at any major airport in the United States, according to anews account of her retirement. She was 79. Mrs. Fairchild, who ended 25 years of guiding airplanes safely at airports that year, died March 29 at the Methodist Medical Center, Oak Ridge, Ky. Born in Oakley in Laurel County, she was the wife of Frank M.

Fairchild, who died in 1972. She had been a member of the First Christian Church, Berea, since 1919. A Federal Aviation Agency watch supervisor had charge of one of the three daily watches or shifts of about 10 people manning the airport control tower and electronic and radar equipment to help pilots land and take off. During the manpower shortage of World War II, Mrs. Fairchild entered the Civil Aeronautics Administration training school in Chicago in 1942.

"I have always been interested in aviation," she told a reporter upon her retirement. "I was a bookkeeper for the General Electric Co. (Cincinnati) at the time, and this was a real After training at Fort Worth, Texas, she was sent in 1944 to the Cincinnati Center at that time at Lunken Airport. She also helped to prepare the Civil Service examination for the first tower control operators at Lunken. Dr.

Robert O'Shaughnessy Dr. Robert P. O'Shaughnessy, 68, Delhi Township, George Dr. surgeon 'Carew died Monday at St. St.

Hospital. O'Shaughnessy was a colo-rectal and maintained an office in the Tower from 1952 to 1980. He was an Eagle Scout in the first Boy Scout troop organized in his hometown of Lawrenceburg, Ind. His family owned the former James Walsh Distillery in Lawrenceburg. He served in the Army Medical Corps during World War II and was on the staffs at Good R.

O'Shaughnessy surgeon Samaritan, St. George, old St. Mary and Providence hospitals. He was a member of the American Medical Association, Ohio State Medical Association, American College of ColoRectal Surgeons and Cincinnati Academy of Medicine. He was a graduate of Georgetown Preparatory School, Washington, D.C.; completed undergraduate studies at Notre Dame University in 1941 and obtained his medical degree at the University of St.

Louis Medical School in 1944. His residency was at Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati. "He was very low key, unassuming, and everyone said how kind he was. He had a wonderful Irish sense of humor," said his wife, Dorothy Timmens O'Shaughnessy. He was a Civil War buff and had the honorary position of battalion surgeon of the Union Re-enactment Association.

He would buy every Civil War book when it came out, and I would kid him that he was looking for one that said the South had won." The surgeon's special interests also included native American Indian culture Fairchild supervisor for In 1944 and 1945 she attended evening college at the University of Cincinnati. She was transferred to the Greater Cincinnati Airport control tower when it opened Jan. 10, 1947. She also took several aviation technical courses provided during her air traffic control career. 25 years Margaret Fairchild in 1967 Mrs.

Fairchild was a private pilot and member of the OX-5 Aviation Pioneers of America. OX-5 was the name of the first U.S.-made engine for commercial airplanes. She was also a member of the Greater Cincinnati Airman's Club and as secretary drew up its bylaws and constitution. She was a member of the National Retired Teachers Association and a member of the Civil Air Patrol in Cincinnati during World War II. She was a patron member of the Air Traffic Control Association National and a charter member of i its Ohio Chapter.

She leaves a sister, Mary Gaines Broache, Oak Ridge, and a brother, James E. Gaines of Florida. Services were April 2 in the Wray Funeral Home Chapel, Berea, Ky. Burial, in Berea Cemetery. Besides his wife, survivors include five sons, Denis Michael, Kevin Patrick, Timothy Robert, Terence Peter, and Robert Joseph; and three daughters, Rita Maura Kortekamp, Mary Patricia Bastian, and Shelagh Celeste Marie O'Shaughnessy, all of Cincinnati; and six grandchildren.

The dog bit the boy on the buttocks about 7 p.m. Walker was taken to Providence Hospital, where the wound was stitched. In lieu of other remembrances memorials may be made to the Cincinnati Nature Center. man State news called in Tuesday to investigate the attack by two pit bull dogs. In the wake of Monday's attack, a city commissioner said he wanted an ordinance which that would ban pit bull dogs from the city. William G. Eckman, 67, of Kettering, died during surgery at Good Samaritan Hospital after he was attacked at a house on the city's north side, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Montgomery County coroner's investigator J.R. Williams said Eckman have died of a heart attack, but a ruling on the cause of death was deferred until after an autopsy. Eckman is former chief of staff at St. Elizabeth Medical Center and chief of surgery at the local Veterans Administration Hospital. One of the dogs' owners, Joetta Darmstadter, 32, was bitten, apparently as she tried to help Eckman, witnesses and police said.

She was in fair condition Tuesday. Hickey, quoting the Humane Society of the United States, said 15 Ohioans died as a result of dog attacks in 1986. Under Hickey's bill, a dog would be branded as dangerous if it had without provocation tried to bite or attack a person or another animal while not under control of its owner.
