Miller, 95, who received a doctorate at age 81 from the University of Cincinnati after 55 years of teaching and coaching at schools in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, died Tuesday at a Pompano Beach, hospital. When he began his doctoral research in education, most of his fellow 1977 graduates and many of the faculty were not yet born. It was 1933. By that time, he already had 20 years experience as a teacher, principal, championship coach of baseball, basketball and football teams, teaching supervisor and schools superintendent. He began teaching at age 17 in a one-room country school in Waterloo, Ohio, his home town, near Iron-ton.

Mr. Miller retired at age 72, following 10 years of teaching English at North Dearborn, High School. He and his wife, Marian Elizabeth, moved to Florida from Cincinnati several years ago. His teaching career went from rural Southeastern Ohio to Mansfield, to Wittenberg College as a student and baseball coach, to Defiance College as dean of men, where he met his wife. While pursuing a master's degree at the University of Kentucky, he taught English and coached football at Kentucky Wesleyan College.

"We played UC twice and beat them both times," he said in a 1977 interview at his degree ceremony. He had been in the Cincinnati public school system for 13 years and was teaching at Central High School when the U.S. government sent him to Japan as principal of a school for American dependents in Kyoto in 1948. There, he oversaw the education of children of American servicemen and made the school a model fo restructuring the post-World War II Japanese school system democratically. "Japanese officials would come to the school and I would show them around," he said.

"I convinced them that freedom always includes the rights of somebody else. Your freedom stops when you begin to impinge upon the freedom of others." Upon his return two years later, he taught in schools in Cincinnati and Indiana. Mr. Miller had completed all work toward his doctorate except his thesis when he was asked to go to Japan. In 1976, UC officials asked him to write about his work in Japan, and accordingly awarded him the doctorate.

At the conclusion of his 1977 interview, Mr. Miller said, "I would leave you with one thought from the Hindu philosopher, Tagore. Education is precious to us because we never have the time to complete it." Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Ted, Pompa- no, and Jack, San Jose, and four grandchildren. Graveside service will be 1 p.m. today at Pompano Beach Cemetery.
