Lefties have edge on batting average By United Press International New statistics about baseball show success at home plate may be less a matter of how you bat than of which hand you bat with. Neurologist John McLean and researcher Francis Ciurczak of the University of Illinois College of Medicine have conducted a statistical study of major-league ball players and found the athelete who bats left and throws left traditionally boasts a clearly better batting average than his right-handed counterpart.

The May issue of Science Digest explains why lefties have the edge. Generally each hemisphere of the brain dominates the opposite side of the body. One of the only exceptions is that in the case of lefties, motor control may be more equally distributed between both hemispheres, as is known to be the case with speech. "For southpaws, then, neither hemisphere would dominate coordination absolutely," McLean said. Send your news tip to The Salina Journal; up to $45 in cash each week.
