You decide to stay over one more night to enjoy dinner out at one of the city's liner restaurants. The only problem is you'll be dining alone. You don't mind, what about the restaurant? "Most restaurants are eluctant to give a table to a single customer," said food and restaurant writer Jay Jacobs, a contributing editor to Gourmet magazine. "The single diner is' taking up a table for two, and that means a lower dinner bill and tip." That doesn't mean the single diner should retreat to his or her hotel room and order up room service. There are ways to have a pleasant dinner out by yourself.

First, however, you have to overcome two major s'umbling blocks: getting a table ant' getting good service. Many restaurants won't even take reservations for a single diner. So you should plan your meal during off hours. "Most restaurants would prefer the single diner come either early or late, not during peak hours, either for dinner or lunch," Jacobs said. In talking about the subject with restaurant owners and frequent travelers, he said he found the best way to get a table is for someone you know in the city you are visiting a business associate, for example to intercede for you by calling a restaurant he or she frequents and asking for a reservation for you.

"If one does a lot of traveling, it's a good idea to keep a book with the names of valued customers or business associates and to ask them to call on your behalf, or to know the name of someone who frequents the restaurant and to mention his name when making the reservation." Don't try for a reservation but arrive at the restaurant early, have a drink at the bar and strike up a conversation with the maitre d', explaining your circumstances. Don't bribe the maitre d' for a table. If you come in without a reservation and he finds a table for you, tip him more than adequately. This will let him know and he'll tell your waiter that you are a good tipper. "In this situation, it's a good idea to overcompensate on tipping to compensate for the fact that you are the only one at the table." Once at a table, immediately ask for the wine list.

"This lets the waiter know you are ready to treat yourself to the best." Because restaurants are seeing an increase in the number of single diners, some have started up a "chef's table" or a "host's table" at hich unattached diners can all sit together at one large table and enjoy each other's company. Jacobs thinks the chef's table is an idea whose time has come. "A guest and I sat at a chef's table in a New York restaurant recently, and it was amazingly effective for those who had come in alone," he said. "People were passing around their dishes and it became very clubby. It's a way of welcoming singles I'd like to see more of 'it." 4332 RIVER ROAD at ANDERSON FERRY Phone for reservations (513) 771-3777 Call for Reservations 451-5100 WiNCjAMMCK 11320 Chester Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45246 Thanksgiving BUFFET 1 1 :30 am to 9:00 pm $7.95 Adults Children 5 to 9 under 4-FREE -MENU- Roast turkey breast Glazed baked ham Southern fried chicken Old fashioned corn bread stuffing Candied yams Whipped potatoes Cranberry sauce Buttered corn Green bean almondine Dinner rolls Salad bar Asst.
