Tarkenton, record-shattering operator of the Minnesota Viking offense, was an easy winner in the balloting by a nationwide panel of sports writers and broadcasters in both the MVP and offensive player polls. In both votes, he outdistanced running backs 0. J. Simpson of Buffalo and Terry Metcalf of St.

Louis. Tarkenton's teammate, running back Chuck Foreman of Minnesota, was four- th.in both polls. Others receiving votes included quarterbacks Billy Kilmer PASQIJALES PIZZA 1610 W. (AP) Travis Grant has been traded by the Kentucky Colonels of the American Basketball Association to the Indiana Pacers for "future considerations," the Colonels announced Monday. In return for Grant, the Colonels will get a future draft pick from the Pacers, according to Colonels publicity director John Hamilton. However, Hamilton declined to say how high the draft pick would be. Grant, 26, has averaged 5.7 points per game for the Colonels this season. A former player for Kentucky State University.

Grant holds the all-time college scoring record of over 4,000 career points, and once scored 75 points in one game. Tarkenton completed his most memorable season in 1975, shattering a fistful of Johnny Unifas' career records.

The remarkably durable passer pushed his career attempts total to 5,225 and eaised his completion total to 2,931, both figures eclipsing marks that Unitas had set in 18 NFL seasons. But the most impressive of Unitas' records broken by Tarkenton was the total of 290touchdown passes. Fran smashed that record on the final Sunday of the regular season, when he hurled a pair against Buffalo, running his career total to 291. For the season, Tarkenton won his first passing title, completing 273 aerials, the third highest single season figure in NFL history. He threw for 2,994 yards and 25 touchdowns.

He passed for more than 1,000 yards for the 15th consecutive season, breaking Bobby Layne's record. He has gone over 2,000 yards for 14 straight years, one more than Unitas managed. Tarkenton has passed for 38,840 yards. His next milestone will be Unitas' career yardage record of 40,239, a target he will be shooting for when the 1976 season starts. Reaching so many of Unitas' marks was a big thrill for Tarkenton.

"I've always thought of Unitas as the greatest quarterback who ever lived," Tarkenton said. The admiration is mutual. "Francis is going to set some records that never will be broken," said Unitas. Tarkenton was the Vikings' third round draft choice when they joined the NFL as an expansion team in 1961. After five stormy seasons in which his scrambling style often clashed with the more conservative offensive plans of Coach Norm Van Brocklin, Tarkenton was traded to the New York Giants in 1966.

He spent five yeare with the Giants before being traded back to the Vikings in 1972. The man who engineered that deal was Coach Bud Grant, who had replaced Van Brocklin shortly after the Vikings traded Tarkenton away. Grant is unstinting in his praise of Tarkenton. "I don't think there is any question that Francis is going to go down as the greatest quarterback ever to play this game, period," said the Viking coach. "He is going to own all the statistics when he is through.

He'll have accomplished things comparable to what Aaron has done in baseball." At 35, Tarkenton is coming off his greatest season and is at the very peak of his game. "Francis is setting career records while he is at the very top of his profession," said Grant. "He has all the qualities of greatness and enthusiasm, but most important is his durability. Francis is always ready." Tarkenton has never missed a game because of injury even though, at six feet and 190 pounds, he is one of the smallest players on the field. "We just don't get hit that often," he said.

"A running back gets hit more in one game than I do in a full season. A regular throughout his career, Tarkenton missed the plateau only once. That was in his rookie season when he finished a mere three yards short with 1,997. "I am very proud of my level of consistency," Fran has said. "It means I have been able to produce every year.

I would never want to he known as an up-and-down player. That's why I've always admired people like Ty Cobb, who just didn't have bad seasons." Tarkenton knows he can't go on forever. "The day will come when I can't do my job. Success and failure ate part of living," he said. Litwhiler Tabbed ST.

LOUIS (AP) Six coaches, including the University of Texas' Cliff Gustafson, were accorded Coach of the Year recognition Sunday night as the 31st annual American Association of College Baseball Coaches' convention concluded. In other closing action, the group forwarded several recommendations to the NCAA Steering Committee meeting here this week as part of the NCAA's annual convention. The content of the recommendations was not disclosed. Gustafson, the NCAA Division I coaching winner, guided the Longhoms to the national championship at Omaha last summer. Honored in Division II was Don Schaly of Marietta, Ohio, College, whose team finished second in divisional competition.

Bill Brooks, University of North Carolina-Wilmington, was acclaimed the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics' Coach of the Year and Wally Kincaid of Ceritos Community College in Norwalk, won the junior college honor. High school balloting ended in a tie between Tom Graeffe- nauer of Whitenall High School, Greenfield, and Dick Wagner of Burlington, Iowa, High School. Honored for making the most significant contribution to the game was Danny Litwhiler, coach at Michigan State and former major league outfielder. (AP) Penn State football Coach Joe Paterno says he is not a candidate for the head coaching job with the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League. Paterno denied a statement by Eagles General Manager Jim Murray that the State coach i.s one of "four serious candidates" to succeed the recently fired Mike McCormack. "They called me and as a courtesy I had some informal talks with them (last Wednesday and Thursday) while I was in Washington last week," Paterno said. "I did not show any interest in the job." Paterno described his talks with Murray and Eagles' owner Leonard Tose as an exploratory session. "There were no offers made and I have not even indicated that I'm interested in the job," Paterno said.

Murray backed off somewhat from his original statement on Paterno. "We felt we had an obligation to talk to him because of public sentiment," the Eagles' general manager said. "Obviously he is an outstanding candidate if he is interested in the job. We have had exploratory talks with him and I was superiorly impressed." 8. Service Offered 8.
