Errors hurt both pitchers Eric Davis made a two-base error which led to two runs in the first and Kurt Stillwell mishandled a double-play ball in Bair two-run sixth.

There was, however, the matter of 13 Detroit hits- eight off Gullickson and four off Bair. Reds 5, Phillies 3 CLEARWATER Down 3-0, catcher Sal Butera hit a two run single in the sixth and Paul O'Neill added a three-run homer in the sixth to give the Reds a split for the day. All the Reds' runs came off Tom Hume, former Cincinnati reliever. The good Nick Esasky hit his second and third home runs of the season, both off Detroit starter Walt Terrell. Esasky's home run in the first broke an 0-for-10 streak.

Esasky is 1 1 -for-49 (.224) this spring. Mike Smith, who pitched the eighth, and Ted Power, who handled the ninth, marched through the Tigers. Smith al lowed a two-out single and Power retired the side in or der. At Clearwater, starter Ron Robinson allowed five hits in five innings but struck out six. He gave up three runs, two earned.

Chris Welsh pitched two more scoreless innings. He has given up one run in 10 innings. That run came in his first inning of the spring. The bad The errors against Detroit were unsightly and hardly helpful. Worse, the Reds have committed 30 this spring in 20 games The Reds had back-to-back hits leading off the second against Detroit and couldn't get a run out of it.

Gullickson struck out trying to bunt, Davis grounded into a fielder's choice, Pete Rose walked to load the bases, but Dave Parker flied out to center. The rest Catcher Bo Diaz stole a base. He has seven in his career. He was 2-for-4. He is batting .353 (12-for-34) Rose was 0-for-3.

Husted clings to pin lead Despite winning just three of his eight match games, Dave Husted of Milwaukie, held on to the lead after the fifth round of the $235,000 Toledo Trust Professional Bowlers Association National Championship. Husted, who finished fourth at Toledo last year, maintained a 213 average through the first 40 games of the long 56-game format and had a pinfall total of 8,618.

Steve Wunderlich of St. Louis was only 25 pins behind Husted with a pinfall total of 8,593, while Bruce Carter of Round Rock, Texas, was another two pins back with 8,591. Eight-time champion Pete Weber of St. Louis, who was tied with Wunderlich in second place after 32 games, fell to fourth with 8,578, just 40 pins behind Husted. Tony Moore, like Carter a non-winner, rounded out the top five with 8,472.

Bucs uncertain on Jackson The Tampa Bay Buccaneers say they haven't decided if they'll make Bo Jackson the No. 1 pick in next month's National Football League draft. But if the team does, it could be without knowledge of what it will take to sign him and keep him out of professional baseball. Southeastern Conference rules forbid Jackson, the Heisman Trophy-winning running back from Auburn, from conducting contract negotiations while he's still playing college baseball. That means it could be more than two weeks after the April 29 draft that the Bucs learn more about the probability of signing him.

German upsets Wilander Unseeded Erik Jelen of West Germany shocked top-seeded Mats Wilander of Sweden, 6-4, 6-2, in the second round of the $315,000 ABN tennis tournament at Rotterdam. Stefan Edberg of Sweden, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, reached the quarterfinals by defeating Dutchman Michiel Schapers, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6. Scott Davis, attacking the net and scoring with hard cross-court forehand smashes, upset Tim Mayotte, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5), in second-round action at the $315,000 VolvoChicago Tennis tournament at Chicago- Elsewhere Joe Theismann is ready to talk to the Los Angeles Rams, if the Rams are ready to talk to him. The Washington Redskins have given their quarterback permission to negotiate with other National Football League teams.

Theismann told the Anaheim Bulletin that the Rams are the first team he wants to talk to if he no longer has a future with the Redskins. Two-time Boston Marthan winner Joan Be-noit reportedly will not run in this year's race because she is still recovering from surgery. Benoit, who won the 26-mile, 385-yard race in 1979 and 1983, is coming off double Achilles surgery. Referee Dave Newell suffered injured ribs after he was slammed into the boards early in the second period in Thursday night's NHL game between the Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens. Washington Bullets forward Jeff Ruland did not undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee on Thursday as originally scheduled, the team announced.

The procedure will be conducted April 4 in Rochester N.Y., by Dr. Kenneth Dellaven. ENQUIRER NEWS SERVICES 2B. 3RBI Records. WH 1-0, 0-1.
