Wednesday. December 11, 1985 THE CINCINNATI ENQUIRER METRO B-9 Couple On Trial In Son's Death iiiVx 2 r.r3 Li JJ uLiy Li THE ASSOCIATED PRESS MADISON, friend of a Fort Knox, couple who are charged in the death of their 2-year-old son says the couple cared for their dog but left their son alone for more than three hours in a hot car at last summer's Madison Regatta. Petra and Lewis Ross Sr. are charged with neglect of a dependent and reckless homicide in the death of their son, Lewis Ross Jr. Prosecutors say the child was strapped to a child restraint seat in the Ross car and died July 7 from extreme heat.

The couple's trial started Monday. Jefferson County Prosecutor Merritt K. Alcorn expects the trial to last three days. The Rosses have waived their right to a jury trial to face Judge Joseph L. Hen-sley.

James Meadows, a friend and fellow soldier with Ross at Fort Knox, testified that he and the Rosses took the child and dog to the riverbank to watch the boat races. But the child was "fussy," Meadows said, and the Rosses returned him to the car five minutes later. Meadows said he made three trips back to the car during the race, each time giving the child a' drink of water or soda. The car's interior was hotter with each trip, he said. Although the windows were "cracked 6 inches," the child had sweat "dripping from his forehead" during his last trip to the car, Meadows said.

After the boat races, the Rosses and Meadows returned to the Meadows said the child "had white stuff coming out of his. mouth." ENQUIRER STAFF and ENQUIRER NEWS SERVICES GREASY RIDGE, Ohio-Paul Herrell, a 41-year-old self-employed truck driver, became almost $7 million richer Tuesday when the Ohio Lottery Commission certified him as the holder of the winning ticket In last week's Ohio Lotto drawing. Lottery officials said It was the second-largest single prize won since the Lotto game began In April, 1983. "I Just couldn't believe It," said Herrell. "It couldn't happen.

No one wins the lottery as far as I'm concerned." Because Herrell purchased the ticket from his wife's grocery store in this rural Lawrence County crossroads, about 16 miles northeast of Ironton, Linda Herrell would be eligible for a $10,000 commission for selling the winning ticket, lottery officials said. It is the second-largest single Lotto prize since the game began in April, 1983. 'Herrell Insists there won't be any splurging. "I'm not raised that way. The only thing we wanted to do Is go to Hawaii and we Just came back two weeks ago." LOTTERY OFFICIALS said Herrell would collect the prize In 20 yearly payments of $341,124 before federal taxes.

Herrell said he bought the ticket Saturday, using a lottery computer at the sale terminal to select the winning numbers: 1, 3, 5, 22, 38 and 39. He was unaware he held the winning ticket until Monday, when he was reading the winning numbers in his wife's store. Herrell, who also Is president of the Symmes Valley Board of Education, said he called his Iron-ton attorney, who advised Herrell to go to the regional lottery office in Marietta to begin the validation process. "I didn't have much time to think about anything on the way to Marietta because my wife was driving too fast," he said. "I Just wanted to get there alive." The couple said they had no immediate plans, although Mrs.

Herrell explained, "We are going to spoil our grandbaby." Herrell said he routinely played the Lotto game about once a month and decided to play last week because of the larger-than-normal jackpot. The largest single Lotto prize was awarded in December, 1983, when David DeVault of Chardon won a drawing for $7.8 million. The largest single jackpot, $24 million on Aug. 4, 1984, was shared by eight ticketholders who won $3 million apiece.
