Brilab defendants lose effort to question informant HOUSTON (UPI) A federal judge Thursday thwarted the first defense efforts to force prosecutors to produce FBI informant Joseph Hauser for questioning in a hearing for four Brilab defendants, including Texas House Speaker Bil! Clayton. Defense lawyers learned Wednesday that Hauser, a convicted racketeer has operated from Massachusetts to California, was paid $65,000 in salary and benefits and received leniency on a prison sentence for cooperating with the FBI's Los Angeles-based investigation of corruption among labor and public officials. Defense attorneys objected to the absence of the twice-convicted felon Thursday as prosecutors played clandestinely recorded tapes that traced Mauser's shift to Texas last summer. CRYPTOQUOTES prosecutors that Hauser would be available for the scheduled Sept. 8 trial of Clayton and his codefendants, overruled the objections. Prosecutors have refused to disclose Mauser's whereabouts. Bruce Helton, a Justice Department strike force lawyer from Los Angeles, testified Hauser went to prison last November, apparently only a few days after Clayton accepted $5,000 from him and Operating Engineers Union representative L.G. Moore of Houston while promising to try to re-open bidding on a $76 million state employees' insurance contract.

Hauser represented himself from April 1979 until he went to prison as a Prudential Insurance Co. agent willing to pay bribes, split commissions and make kickbacks in exchange for placement of group insurance policies. The FBI shifted his operations from Beverly Hills, to Texas last summer because of speculation in West Coast labor groups that he had become an informant. Eventually, Grubbs introduced Hauser to Moore who became his key go- between in dealing with unions, hospital districts, junior college districts and politicians in Dallas, Fort Worth, Amarillo, Galveston, Austin, Victoria, Beaumont, Tulsa, and Little Rock, Ark. Clayton, Moore and Austin lawyers Donald Ray and Randall Wood were indicted June 12 on racketeering, fraud, extortion and conspiracy charges involving the $5,000 accepted by Clayton. Defense lawyers claim the government manufactured jurisdiction and entrapped defendants.

Well, my husband and I arc the perfect example I'm Irish and my husband is Swedish, and even though we love each other.

we are miles apart when it comes to temperament. We can't seem to settle our differences by talking things out as our counselor suggested. Whenever we disagree, we always end up in an argument, and he says, "All right, have it your way." Then he clams up and doesn't speak to me for days. I finally have to tell him that he was right and I was wrong in order to coax him back into a good mood. I would much rather have a good old Irish knock-down, drag-out argument than put up with his sulking and silent treatment.

So how do I gel this stubborn Swede to blow his cork and get hi.s n-si-ritmcnl. out in the open where he can deal with it? LOUD-MOUTH KI) MICK DKAK MICK: You cun't, hut the right therapist might hi- to. Your husband needs to learn the importance of expressing his emotions and getting all that linger out of his system. Bottled-up resentment can cause ulcers, high blood pressure, skin rushes and any number of physical ailments. UKAK ABBY: I'm going with a 2-1-year-old fellow.

Andy is a decent, likable, considerate person. There's only one thing wrong with him. He an almost babyish attachment to his mother. If he's going to be out after midnight, he always calls her to let her know, because he says she worries about him getting hurt in his car. Andy will never make a date with me unless he checks with his mother first to be sure she has something to do.

She a widow, and he doesn't want her to he alone. We can never make plans for Sunday afternoon because he reserves that time to take his mother to visit friends and relatives. (She's an invalid.) Andy wants to marry me, but I'm afraid I will always play second fiddle to hi.s mother. I need your advice. RHONDA I)KAR RHONDA: Grab him.
