Funny, but in TV's infancy, characters couldn't even say the word "pregnant," let alone sleep in the same bed. "It seems like an epidemic, doesn't it?" says Designing Women creator Linda Bloodworth-Thoma-son. Why all the babies? The producers interviewed have no pat answers. Some story lines are a direct result of an actress's off-screen pregnancy. Others are a natural cause and effect of a family-based sitcom.

"I worry about analyzing trends too much," says David Jacobs, creator of ABC's new Homefront series. "But I certainly think it's in the air." Designing Women has done its part, birthing one baby by design and making plans for another new arrival next spring.
