>Y ' i '" T •* ^_ f j ' ' \1 l -* ' J If you have hilly or rolling land that tends to erode easily you had better notf plan on using it entirely for row crops. Soil loss from heavy cropping canMbse' : you a I4t of money. It's better to keep this land in some forage producing crop and use it for livestock grazing. Even here, however," 1 the" pasture will probably return you more dollars if used for cattle, than fbr-hogs. There has been a lot of discussion on complete vs. free choice rations. Experiments conducted at a number of colleges prove that a complete ration will give more rapid gains. By mixing the feed for the hogs you know they are getting the proper amount of each nutrient, so long as the ration is formulated properly. New work with pelleted complete ra- tions'also shows that this has distinct advantages. Pellets are a lot easier to handle and feed waste can be greatly reduced. W-' , I, If you raise hogs in confinement you'll need to use a better balanced ration than when hogs are fed on pasture. Generally in confinement hogs should be fed a ration containing around 16% protein until they weigh 75 pounds, From 75 to 125 pounds the protein content,of the ration can be cut back to 14%, During the finishing ! period,' from 12J> pounds to market weight,.you can cut*the protein content back to 12%, You'll Want to provide extra .vitamin B and minerals, „ which can be purchased as a premix andjncluded In the ration.. Some alfalfa meal should be included, Hogs grown on pasture do not require as much supplemental protein as those grown 'in confinement.. However, they utilize more energy in roaming around the field and thus feed efficiency is not as good. Best estimates indicate an acre of hog pasture returns you only $10 to $15 per acre yearly compared to nearly twice this amount when used for corn production. ^Motel-Like Convenient DOWNTOWN MINNEAPOLIS •JP* HOTEL ff Francis Drake Free overnight parking; TV and Radio in all rooms.
