Emporla, Kansas, Monday, October 9, 1933 THE EMPOEIA DAILY GAZETTE a JUST FLYING FOR FUN Amelia Earhart, Who Speaks Here Friday, Finds in Air. Amelia Earhart will relate the history of her flying experiences when she gives, her address "Flying lor Fun" ui the Lowther Junior High school auditorium Friday evening. The Women's City club is bringing Miss Earhart to Emporia and the event promises to be one of the most notable occasions the town' has enjoyed. Miss Earhart is the world's foremost women flier and one of the best known women of today. She is to be a delightful speaker and her address will be of equal interest to men and- women, since it deals with the past, present and future of aviation.

Every holder of it Women's City club membership card will be admitted to the Earhart lecture upon presentation of the card and the husband of a member also will be admitted on his wife's membership card. Single admission tickets will be available for non-members. Amelia Earhart has been flying since 1920 and during the 12 years of her aerial experiences she has established many records. Her most recent achievement was a non-stop flight across the American continent when she nearly equalled the time record of Frank I Hawks, her old instructor. I Began in California.

Miss Earhart began her flying career in California. She was the first woman to obtain the Federation Aeronautic International license granted by the National Aeronautical Association of the United States, and she holds the third transport license, the highest pilot's rating, granted to an Amerlean woman. She was the first won to solo an airplane round-trip across the United States in 1928. the first woman to have crossed the Atlantic in a plane and the only woman to have crossed solo. Her solo flight was made May 20 and 21, 1932.

Miss Earhart has been aviation editor of Cosmopolitan magazine, assistant to the general traffic manager of Transcontinental Air Transport, vice president of the Ludington line, first vice present and member of the advisory board of the National Aeronautical asso- i ciation and a member of its con- i test committee, president of the Ninety-nines, a pioneer club of women pilots: associate member of the Society of Aeronautical Engineers and the A. S. M. and a member of the Guggenheim committee for aeronautical education In schools. Miss Earhart established the first women's maximum speed rec- 11 ord of 181 miles an hour over a 3- kilometer course.

She holds the autogiro record of altitude of I 415 feet, the American transconti- nental speed recoi'd for women; and the woman's speed records over 100-kilometer course with and without a 500-kilogram Among Foremost Women. In selecting the "50 foremost wo- men in the United Ida Tarbell included Miss writing about her as fololws: "Our top-notch woman flier, a place honestly earned and held with dignity and modesty. Chromium Mine To Be Gold Shares Leap. Benguet Consolidated Mining company, the largest mining concern in the Philippines, has signed a contract for the exploitation of extensive chromium deposits in the Province of Ambos Camarines and is planning an ex- penditure of $125.000 on the project. These are declared to be the only commercial chromium deposits un- der the American flag, although army reservations in the Province of Zambales presumably are rich in Chromitc ores. The Benguet company is the largest gold producer in the Philippines and expects a profit of at least as a result of the recent price order, but former Judge John Haussermann, its president, said that all gold deposits were temporary and therefor believed the company was correct in expanding to other commercial ores. The Philippines are in the midst of the greatest boorn in mining stock ever experienced here.

The Benguet company, which also operates at Balatoc, brings the highest price, it shares having risen from cente less than 10 years ago to be- Uween $30 and $40. Because of the large capital avail- the Benguet company is ap- preached with numerous propositions to operate other mining properties, and a rumor that Benguet is Interested is sufficient to skyrocket any stock.
