SMITH SPECIAL TO THE HOOD COUNTY NEWS SAN SABA Legend has it that in 1935, Rogan Field in San Saba was built on top of an existing gravesite, and not all of the graves were emptied.

There have been numerous instances of paranormal happenings during football games here, often in favor of the Armadillos. But on Friday night, on All Hallows Eve, of all nights the Tolar Rattlers were not spooked at all. Tolar scored 48 unanswered points en route to a 64-14 thumping of San Saba (2-2 in district, 2-7 overall). With the victory, along with wins by Hico and Crawford, the Rattlers (3-1 in district, 7-2 overall) clinched a playoff spot and secured a second-place finish in District 7-2A, Div. I.

Tolar will have a rematch with Bosqueville on the slate for the first round of the Texas 2A Div.1 playoffs. The date and location for that playoff game was not set by press time. The Rattlers won the previous meeting with Bosqueville, holding on to a 16-11 victory. defense was stellar yet again, especially against the run. San Saba only managed 37 rushing yards on 39 attempts, with 17 of those carries being stopped behind the line.

Meanwhile, Tolar running backs Blayne Denton and Marcus Garcia accounted for all nine Rattler touchdowns, with 5 and 4 respectively. Denton outgained the entire Armadillo team with 219 rush- ing yards to their 192 total yards. a strong running game is a great luxury to Tolar head coach Mike Franklin said. (the Armadillos) were double-covering Buckelew and it really opened up the lanes for Blayne and QUICK STRIKE After Tolar forced an early punt, quarterback Dakota Endsley hooked up with Heston Buckelew for a 55-yard pass play, giving the Rattlers first and goal from the 1-yard line. Garcia squeezed through a gap for the first touchdown.

Gordon Lewis ran in a 2-point conversion and the Rattlers led, 8-0. Lewis intercepted an Armadillo pass and returned it 20 yards to the San Saba 15-yard line to set up next score. Denton found the end zone two plays later, and Dalton Shaw threw to Lewis for another 2-point conversion and a 16-0 advantage. The Armadillos responded when Holt Oliver found Garrett Welch in the end zone for a 28- yard touchdown pass. Welch also took the two-point conversion run in for a score, and the Tolar lead was cut in half, 16-8.

However, San Saba would not score again for the next 38 minutes. Tolar put together an impressive drive on its next possession, going 63 yards in only 7 plays in just under two minutes. Denton scored on a 3-yard run, and the Rattlers led 22-6 as the first quarter closed. Denton scored the only two touchdowns of the second quarter. The first came from 30 yards out and capped a 3-play, 41-yard drive.

The second was a 62-yarder. That put Denton over the mark on the season, including 464 yards and 7 TDs in the last two games. The Rattlers took a commanding 35-8 lead into halftime. After Tolar received the second-half kickoff, Denton tallied his fifth rushing touchdown of the game, completing a 61-yard drive. The five touchdowns are the most Denton has had in a single game this season.

John Dollins returned to action from an injury and nailed a 33-yard field goal to give Tolar a 44-8 lead. After that, Garcia scored three consecutive times he touched the ball on runs of 7, 28 and 27 yards. He finished the night with 4 touchdowns on just 6 carries for 68 yards. knew we were going to have to line up and execute, and I thought we did a good job of that on both sides of the ball Franklin said. The Rattlers will close out district and regular season play Friday on Senior Night at home against the De Leon Bearcats (7:30 p.m.).

The Bearcats (3-6, 1-3 in district), and are coming off a 4420 home win over Hamilton.
