History moving from courthouse to Opera House BY RICK MAUCH HOOD COUNTY NEWS History comes to the Granbury Opera House, and making a short trek across the street. The story of how the United States took a major step to independence is the subject of The The show, presented by the Granbury Theatre Company, will open Friday and run through July 6. The run will deviate from that of other shows in that it will show Friday- Sunday this week, and resume Wednesday through July 6. It will include two performances on July 4 at 2 and 7:30 p.m. The production, which is being billed as a summer tradition, is moving to the Granbury Opera House this year now that the theater has been renovated and re-opened.

It was previously presented in the upstairs courtroom of the historic Hood County Courthouse in 2012 and 2013. The musical is based on the events leading up to the drafting and signing of the Declaration of Independence. John Adams, disliked by many in congress, teams up with Benjamin Franklin to bring forward a resolution for independence. Thomas Jefferson will draft the declaration that will eventually set America free from tyranny. Kent Whites will play Adams, Tony Hedges is Franklin, and Nathaniel Milson will portray Jefferson.

While the quest for independence might seem like something that would have overwhelmingly popular among congress, it was anything but. There were obstacles that almost brought the declaration to death before it ever had a chance to live. Among the staunchest opponents was South Carolina representative Edward Rutledge, portrayed by Xan Cramer. His showdowns with Adams are among the most fiery moments. 817-573-7066, ext.
