GUEST ARTIST: Maria Joao Pires, piano; Jesus Lopez-Cobos conducting. PROGRAM: Brahms, Variations on a Theme of Haydn; Chopin, Concerto No. 2 in Minor; Brahms, Symphony No. 4. Performances 8:30 p.m.

today and Saturday, Music Hall. 381-3300. CRITICAL VIEW: A mainstream Romantic program loaded with familiar works. The pianist is the star in Chopin's concerto. The orchestra's real tasks are staying out of the soloist's way and providing a little sonic fluff; otherwise, you can pretty much ignore it.

Brahms won't let you ignore his orchestra, however. The Haydn Variations shows off the instruments with some of Brahms' most gracious writing. The Symphony No. 4, a work of deep emotions and learned construction, hits you with haunting themes and piquant harmonies. The work ends the way this concert begins, with a set of variations but a set far different in character, complexity and mood.

It has the power to mesmerize. RAY COOKLIS Pianist Maria Joao Pires Jan. 30-Feb. 25: Fences, Pulitzer Prize-winning play about black baseball players, Marx Theatre, Playhouse in the Park, Eden Park. 421-3888.
