Declarer won the king of diamonds opening lead, drew a round of trumps and then ruffed a diamond. He returned to his hand with a trump and took the spade finesse. East won the king and returned a spade. Declarer entered his hand with a spade ruff and tried a heart to the king. East took two heart tricks for down one.

Unlucky, remarked South. Every card was wrong. That was true. Nevertheless deLuck been blamed for clarer's technique, and not Lady the contract's failure. South lost the hand when he drew a round of trumps prematurely.

Correct technique is to ruff a diamond at trick two. Now declarer can get back to his hand with a trump, ruff his remaining diamond and return to his hand with another trump. That still leaves a trump in dummy. With the groundwork done, declarer leads a heart. Whatever card plays, the contract is guaranteed.

If West plays an honor, declarer covers with the king. Even if East wins the ace, he is forced to lead another heart, which sets up dummy's 10 for a spade discard, or a spade into the ace-queen. As the cards lie, West will follow with a low heart and declarer inserts dummy's 10. East wins the jack, but again he has a choice of losing plays. Observe that it is vital to ruff a diamond before touching trumps.

If declarer draws a round of trumps first, he will exhaust dummy of trumps by the time he had eliminated the diamonds. Now East will be able to exit safely with a diamond. But an equal number are strolling unshod through New York because they drew trumps too soon. South's two club rebid was a slight underbid.

However, he was reluctant to jump to three clubs lest his partner play him for more in the way of high cards. North's bid of three clubs, while also conservative, left open three no-trump a possible game contract. South might have maneuvered toward that contract by cue-bidding his diamond stopper, but he decided five clubs would be better. biorhythms PHYSICAL: Criticals: 7, 19, 30, Highs: 1-6, 20-29, Lows: 8-18, 31-41, Jonathan Alexander's biorhythm permanent numbers are 31, 30, 45.
