US District Court in Owensboro The first suits were filed last month in state and federal courts They seek more than $100 million from the British company and related firms that provided equipment suspected of contributing to the Sept 13 1989 blast Those women also charged that the US Mine Safety and Health Administration was negligent in its oversight of the mine The women who filed the latest suit are Janet Ashmore widow of Lynn Ashmore Peggy Clifford widow of Roger Clifford Ruth Hedges widow of Mark Hedges rankie Reed widow of Kenneth Reed and Vickie Tinsley widow of James Tinsley In their complaint the women say Pyro used and un acceptable mining practices over a long period of that led to the high methane levels that fueled the blast the nation's worst mining disaster since 1984 MIDDLESBORO Ky (AP) A 21 year old woman found dead in Pine Mountain State Resort Park in southeastern Kentucky last month was strangled according to the state medical office Jennifer Bailey a Greasy Creek resident who was found dead on Aug 26 died of asphyxiation said Dr David Wolf a forensic an thropologist with the medical office Asphyxiation means suffocation Authorities are still sorting out debris and additional evidence taken at the scene by medical examiners Wolf said Kentucky State Police have interviewed several possible suspects in connection with death leads are being pursued to the fullest extent and will con tinue to KSP Detective Jerry Brewer said Wednesday A Lee County Va man was among suspects interviewed by investigators Lee County Sheriff RV Chadwell said Wednesday that his de partment had detained the man for an interview by Kentucky State Police but said the man was not placed under arrest Chadwell declined to release the name saying he had not been charged have not eliminated Brewer said Brewer said police have interviewed several people in several states in what is expected by officials to be a lengthy investigation Bailey had been missing since Aug 16 when she disappeared while jogging in Pineville UK gas leak bigger than thought LEXINGTON Ky (AP) A gas leak at the University of Ken tucky does not pose an immediate threat even though larger than originally thought a city environmental official said UK also faces up to $215000 in fines already for the Aug 13 spill of 1400 gallons of Jet A gas a helicopter fuel similar to ker osene Environmental officials originally estimated the leak at 500 gallons The leak occurred when workers at the new helicopter transport pad atop a parking structure forgot to close a valve while testing a fuel line to the roof from a 10000 gallon underground storage tank The parking structure is next to the UK Chandler Medical Center The spill contaminated a nearby stream and forced the evacuation of the parking structure UK and environmental officials thought it would be cleaned up in one or two days But when workers began their investigation they discovered the spill had spread around the parking structure The fuel also had seeped into pumps in a boiler room of the critical care unit said Teresa McGinnis environmental services coordinator for the Division of Environmental and Emergency Management Cleanup of the site has been delayed because officials know the extent of the leak Workers were pumping the water out of the boiler room pipes she said while others were drilling to determine how far the gas spread Although the gas is still underground it does not pose an immedi ate hazard McGinnis said But if not cleaned up soon the gas could move into more sewer systems or rise to the ground where its vapors could be threatening Hazard fire damage being assessed HAZARD Ky (AP) A University of Kentucky quick response team arrived Thursday at Hazard Community College to help deter mine the extent of environmental damage from a chemical fire The blaze forced the evacuation of the college and neighboring businesses Wednesday No injuries were reported Classes were canceled Thursday and riday said Lori Kincaid a spokeswoman for the college any sessions are held Saturday they probably will be moved to an alternate She said the response team go in and assess the damage and see if any hazardous materials are left and figure out how to dispose of Kincaid said no estimate had been made of the damage waiting on an insurance Kincaid said officials told her the fire started with an explosion in a laboratory portion of the main campus building Witnesses said the blast blew out windows near a biology lab about 2:30 pm EDT At least 60 firefighters battled the blaze for about six hours before bringing it under control The campus and a nearby car dealership and golf course were evacuated Kincaid said the fire was confined to two rooms on the lower floor of the two story building Kincaid said school officials believed phosphorus in a chemical storage room exploded when it came in contact with water The State Journal rankfort Kentucky September 7 1990 Section
