rg"^. ""M ,.'>* „ . WT - * f fejMgyttpaj Uptw Sit MotnM Thurtdoy, March S, t»l» Misses Perfect 300 Tally By 0 ne Lousy !-N? Pin Whitey Voigt ,-fc-ho has been one of this Area's top ke^ers for quite a while, grabbed a corner of the local bowling market Thursday night at Hawkeye Lanes when he missed a perfect game by one obstinate pin. Whitey, Algona mail carrier, wound up with a 299 count and a 628 series total. His' 299 was the best single line effort of all times at Hawkeye and followed lines of 156 and 173, which were far off Whitey's usual pace. He carries a 188 average in the Thursday Classic league and a 196 mark in the Mixed League on Friday nights. A lot of other bowlers were rooting for him Thursday. As each strike brought him closer to every bowler's dream, the tension mounted and Whiley was admittedly nervous as a cat when he picked up his ball and readied for his final toss. He had thrown 11 straight strikes, but couldn't get the twelfth as nine pins fell and the tenth failed to wobble. The first of several prizes Voigt will receive for his hot line was presented to him early Friday morning. Paul Watson, another local post office employee, gave Whitey a gold, star-shaped necktie pin Friday morning. Whitey fell down a flight of stairs at tho office shortly afterward, injuring his left (or non-bowling) arm. He assured everyone it wasn't nervousness over the award. One of Whitey'S' teammates, Hank Geilenfeld, the top bowlet here this year, also had a pretty fair evening. Hank, who seems to ,make it over the 700 series hump quite regularly, hung up another one Thursday. This time his total was 711. Geilenfeld, who carries averages of 196 in the Classic league and 192 in the Mixed league, started out with a 245 line. He added a 266 and seemed to be headed for a possible new high for the entire state when he ran into a little trouble and "cooled 'off to post a 200 in his 'final line. It was the third time this year Geilenfeld has topped 700. He had totals of 706 and 716 earlier an the season and posted a 718 a year ago, also. His 716 totals are highest "in history here, and of seven 700 series registered at Hawkeye, Geilenfeld has all but three. Voigt and Geilenfeld team up with their wives in Mixed league action each Friday. Mrs Voigt, the former Kay KeUey, has long been one of the best women bowlers in town, and Mrs Geileri feld has shown much improve- ment since first taking up the game. When all four have a hot night on the lanes, they're a featly tough combination to beat, (tfDM Polaroid Photo-Engraving) Mr* Wiiltftm Stfttl* wai ess tS ta» v «Utf cKfb cm Waxrtiiay evening.
