But the lawyer for one of them said Tuesday it doesn't help their cause.

The high court Monday upheld the ruling by the association in a case involving families of Michigan students who attend a parochial school in Toledo. Locally, a suit was filed in U.S. District Court in Cincinnati two years ago by Dennis Alerding, father of Dennis a senior at St. Xavier, and Roger H. Moellering, father of David Douglas R.

and Gregory R. Both families live in Kentucky. The suit was filed against the OHSAA, its commissioner, Richard L. Armstrong, and St. Xavier High School.

Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit before a three-judge panel. They were told the matter was under advisement and a decision could be expected in 60 days. Jay Long, attorney for the Alderings, said they would consider going to the Supreme Court if they lost in the 6th Circuit. He said the local case was based on "rights of citizens of one state to be treated equal," while the Toledo suit was based on the violation of the equal protection clause in the 14th Amendment, which outlines a citizens protected rights. Long acknowledged, however, that "this doesn't help our case." Parents of the St.

Xavier students said they still hoped for a favorable decision somewhere along the line that would let their children play interscholastic sports. "It's a total part of their education," said Dennis' mother, Mrs. Linda Alerding. "Dennis is a National Merit semifinalist, so he Just didn't go there for sports, although he would have liked to play tennis and wrestle." Talk of stopping Northern Kentucky athletes from playing sports at St. Xavier first surfaced around 1965, when the Bombers finished second in the state in basketball behind the play of Fort Thomas resident Bob Arnzen.

"There was some talk going way back (1965) that people didn't feel out-of-state students shouldn't participate in sports," said long-time St. Xavier basketball coach Dick Berning. "But it never got past the talking stage. "But it was the use of out-of-state players that got abused by some schools that started other schools to start a move to stop it," he continued. "St.

coming in second in the state didn't cause the problem. We have a lot of Kentucky students who come to school that don't play sports." Lonneman Leads Oak Hills Whether he's on or off the soccer field, Oak Hills' Andy Lonneman is handy. As a woodworker, handy Andy just finished remodeling his parents' basement on Hickory-knolls Drive in Delhi Township. And, as a goalkeeper, the 6-foot-2 senior led his Highlanders Tuesday night to their first victory ever over Cole-rain, 3-1, at Oak Hills. "It's great," Oak Hills boys' soccer coach Chuck Ausman said afterward.

"We have never beaten Colerain before, so this win is extra special to us." The unheralded Highlanders and the city's lOth-ranked Cardinals are tied for the lead in the Metro County Conference with 4-1-0 records. Each team has one MCC contest remaining. The league title will be decided next Tuesday, when Colerain takes on Western Hills and Oak Hills faces Mount Healthy. Last year, Lonneman was voted to the all-state second-team by the Ohio Soccer Coaches' Association. This year, he has been contacted by several colleges.

"I will play college soccer," Lonneman said. "It's Just a question of where. I have always enjoyed working with my hands, so I want to go somewhere where I can study woodworking." It took Lonneman three years to fulfill a promise to his parents, Bob and Sylvia. "I told them I was going to fix up the basement," Andy said. "And I tend to be a perfectionist, so it took longer than I thought." Tuesday night against Colerain, Lonneman patrolled the net, while always shouting encouraging words to his teammates.

"That's my style," (Lonneman said. "It keeps me in the game by 1 talking to the players. If I don't, I lose my concentration." Oak Hills scored first with 12:04 remaining in the first half, when junior Mike Wise took a slick 15-yard pass from Todd Logan and scored from 12 yards. Early in the second half, Bryan Kelley scored from 10 yards to put Oak Hills on top, 2-0, but Colerain's Mark Willey countered quickly with his second score of the season to narrow the margin to 2-1. Goals: OH-MIke Wise, Bryan Kelley and Mark Berding.
