C4 The Sun WEDNESDAY, June 20, 1990 TBS needs to track down money to get sprinter Lewis By DICK PATRICK Gannett News Service A I "It will be fascinating to observe this whole process," Santa Monica Track Club lawyer David Greifinger said. The guidelines call for $3,000 for making the team at last week's national championships, a $10,000 bonus for holding a world record and bonuses for 1988 Olympic gold silver ($7,500) and bronze Medals are not cumulative. The salary cap: $23,000. "If they think they can get Le-roy Burrell for $3,000, no way," Douglas said. Burrell didn't automatically qualify for the team last week, finishing fourth in the long jump, but he's currently the world's hottest sprinter.

As it does with European promoters, SMTC is seeking a package deal. Their leverage: a roster that includes Olympic 200 champion Joe DeLoach (currently injured), Olympic 400 champion Steve Lewis and Olympic 400 bronze medalist Danny Everett. With other athletes entitled to the same privilege, things could get expensive for TBS. "It's incumbent for TAC to inform us of this," Kingdom's agent. John Nubani, said.

"I have no choice but to negotiate a better deal for my client." But money is a factor. As part of its recent peace treaty with The Athletics Congress, Santa Monica Track Club participated at last week's national championships, an event it boycotted last year. Santa Monica was given permission to deal directly with TBS to supplement the appearance fees already in place. U.S. athletes can earn from $3,000 to $23,000, depending on qualifications.

TAC declined comment. Spokesman Bob Dickinson said TBS is unaware of the agreement, and that TAC must conduct all athlete "If they want us, (TBS) has to pay," Santa Monica manager Joe Douglas said. "Goodwill is like any other meet. If they don't pay us, the whole club will go to England or Italy. "I hear they have a $65 million budget.

With all their money, I'll be damned if they'll get one of my athletes for $3,000." The TAC-Santa Monica agreement indicates that other U.S. track and field athletes who aren't in the club like hurdler Roger Kingdom and heptathlete-long jumper Jackie Joyner-Ker-see, both Olympic champions and world record-holders can also negotiate for increased fees. The negotiating games must begin before the Goodwill Games can start for track and Held star Carl Lewis. The Santa Monica Track Club, which includes Lewis and other top U.S. track and field performers, will seek extra appearance money from Turner Broadcasting System, the event's creator.

Seattle and other neighboring cities are host for the Goodwill Games. July 20-Aug. 5. More than 600,000 tickets have already been sold. Lewis, a paid spokesman for the Goodwill Games, gave the event a less-than-ringing endorsement at last week's national championships, calling the competition the best meet in America this year.

But the six-time Olympic gold medalist denies that his faint praise and the unresolved question of whether he'll compete in Seattle is a negotiating ploy. "It's just a matter of money," Lewis said last week, then corrected himself. "It's just a matter of time. We'll work things out." -4 TIF ALAN LESSHVThe Sun Northern Division All-Star Rueben Smiley of San Jose (left) slides under late throw to South's Matt Howard of Bakersfield. The next inning, the North threatened but did not score. With one out, Reuben Smiley hit a ball up the gap in right-center. It bounced over the fence for a ground-rule double. Stockton's Pat Listach followed with a blooper that fell between three players in left field, Smiley moving to third. He moved to second on a wild pitch, took third on a grounder, and scored on San Jose catcher Scooter Tucker's groundout to cut the Nopth's lead to 5-4. Two more McAndrew walks and a single loaded the bases for Clayton, who went down swinging on a curveball.
