IS The 983 members of the Division of Police performed their usual, round-the-clock basic duties to insure the safety of you and your family in the pursuit of your daily activities and tasks. It cost $6,602,720, or $13.14 for each person in the population. Gerald Lerer is the new Polygraph Operator. After completing training at Keeler Institute, Chicago, he assumed his duties November 1.

A civilian, he graduated from UC in August with A. Degree in Psychology. Previous operators were police and a civilian operator is a change in administration policy. The Division desires to maintain the objectivity of the operator and thus demonstrate this intent to those tested and to the public. A recruit class of 41 patrolmen and two policewomen began in June at the Police Academy.

This school work is vital to start recruits on a high level. From the first day each recruit is considered a special individual and accorded the attention required to prepare him for his place in the Division. The policewoman continues to occupy an Increasingly Important place in dealing with youth- ful offenders. The two policewomen were assigned to the Juvenile Bureau. The Division received renewed national recognition as one of the top police organizations.

Time Magazine, September 15, honored Col. Stanley R. Schrotel as the "Top Cop" In the U. S. The article traced the Chief career and lauded the Division's record under his leadership.

Our first group of officers graduated from Chase College of Commerce and Science with a major in Police Science another step in the professionalization of police service. The year saw expansion of the Canine Unit to 9 officers and 9 German Shepherd dogs. This newest and very active and important unit has already proved its worth In helping to capture lawbreakers and reducing hazard to officers. More intensified firearm training was established, with emphasis on double action "combat" type shooting. Accompanying techniques of accurate and safe shooting, legal responsibilities of officers are outlined.

Citizen education is also being intensified, soliciting co-operation of banks, building and loan offices and finance companies, favorite targets of the "hold-up" criminal. Beat patrolmen contact executives of these in their districts, explain modus operandi of these thugs and advise procedures for their personal safety in event of a robbery. Detective training came In for special attention through a four-day seminar for investigators Each man devoted full attention to making an actual case investigation, reporting his experiences back to the seminar. Portable resuscitators were placed In three scout cars assigned to suburban neighborhoods. In additition to their regular duties officers in these cars provide emergency breathing aid until the Life Squad arrives.

Solo motorcycles were discontinued and replaced by police Interceptor cars which provide an all-weather, all-road vehicle not only safer for the operator but less expensive to operate. 9.
